We recently held a tournament featuring sixteen popular characters, letting fans vote in each round to decide who would advance. After a week of exciting matchups, we’re thrilled to announce the winner of the “Greatest Star Wars Character” title! Though many strong characters competed, only one could ultimately take the crown.
CBR Readers Crown Darth Vader as the Greatest Star Wars Character of All Time
Following his decisive victory over Darth Maul, Darth Vader encountered a far more challenging opponent in his old master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Despite Obi-Wan’s popularity as a beloved Star Wars character and his earlier defeat of Anakin Skywalker, Vader ultimately proved too powerful. The second round was a close contest, but Darth Vader emerged victorious and moved on to the semifinals.
In the second-to-last round, Darth Vader faced his greatest fear: Emperor Palpatine. While Palpatine had won earlier matches against opponents like Rey Skywalker and Leia Organa, he couldn’t compete with Vader’s popularity. Vader defeated the Emperor, just like in the original Star Wars movies.
The final showdown pitted Darth Vader against his son, Luke Skywalker. Luke had overcome tough opponents like Padmé Amidala, Han Solo, and Yoda to reach the championship round. While Luke was the only Star Wars character with a real chance of beating Darth Vader, he ultimately couldn’t overcome the power of the Dark Side. In the end, Darth Vader was crowned the greatest Star Wars character of all time.
Star Wars Fans Love Darth Vader
For anyone familiar with Star Wars, it’s not surprising that Darth Vader would win a tournament. Despite strong competition – including Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Leia Organa, and Han Solo – Darth Vader has established himself as a legendary figure over nearly fifty years of films.
Darth Vader instantly became a legendary character when he first appeared in the original Star Wars movie in 1977. Everything about him – his frightening look and the powerful voice of James Earl Jones – was instantly recognizable. The introduction of John Williams’s “Imperial March” theme in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back only added to his intimidating presence.
Look, Darth Vader wasn’t just a villain; he became a genuine cultural icon thanks to that shocking reveal in The Empire Strikes Back. For two films, he was this terrifying, masked figure, and then… boom. He tells Luke he’s his father. It completely flipped everything on its head, and honestly, it laid the groundwork for the prequels years later. But it wasn’t just the shock value. Seeing him ultimately redeem himself in Return of the Jedi shifted the whole focus of Star Wars – it became a story about this seemingly irredeemable figure finding a path to good, and that’s what really resonated with audiences.
Darth Vader is arguably the most iconic villain ever shown on film, not just within the Star Wars universe. Despite his frightening presence, he’s fundamentally a deeply unhappy and pitiful character, driven solely by anger, fear, and hate. Even with all his impressive actions that Star Wars fans enjoy, he remains a tragic figure.
Recent Star Wars shows and movies have really emphasized Darth Vader’s power. Animated series like Star Wars: Rebels and Maul – Shadow Lord demonstrate how frightening he was between the prequel and original Star Wars films. Plus, his intense hallway fight in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is still considered one of the most impressive moments in the entire franchise. Given how important Darth Vader is to Star Wars, it’s no surprise he’s a fan favorite, and now we know just how highly regarded he is within the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars Will Never Move on From Darth Vader
It’s been almost fifty years since Darth Vader first appeared in Star Wars, and he remains incredibly iconic. Even though the original actors who portrayed him have passed away, Darth Vader continues to be a major presence in new Star Wars films, TV series, and video games. It seems this legendary character isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Hayden Christensen has become the primary actor playing Darth Vader in recent Star Wars projects. He first reappeared in the role, wearing the Darth Vader suit, with the 2022 Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since then, he’s played both Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader in Season 1 of Ahsoka and will be back for Season 2 next year.
Darth Vader’s influence extends beyond his own appearances in films. The recent Star Wars sequels, for example, feature Kylo Ren, who intentionally models himself after Vader, even adopting a similar mask and outfit. Vader’s lasting impact makes him one of the most iconic villains ever created, a figure whose fame goes beyond the Star Wars universe itself.
Given his long history and complex personality, it’s no surprise that Darth Vader remains a beloved character among Star Wars fans. He’s not only incredibly powerful, but also a well-developed and fascinating figure. Even if Star Wars ever fades in popularity, Darth Vader’s memorable and intimidating presence will likely endure, as he played a key role in launching one of the most successful movie and television franchises ever created.
All Star Wars titles are available to stream on Disney+.
