Mark Ruffalo has spoken about whether his character, Bruce Banner – also known as the Hulk – will be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. Fans are eager to find out if the Hulk will join the next big battle with Earth’s mightiest heroes.
Mark Ruffalo disappoints Hulk fans for Avengers: Doomsday
Last March, when Marvel announced the actors for Avengers: Doomsday, some well-known characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe were missing from the lineup. Notably absent was Mark Ruffalo, who has consistently played the Hulk since the first Avengers movie and has been a key part of the franchise ever since.
The question of whether Hulk would be in Avengers: Doomsday has been answered. Mark Ruffalo recently told Empire Magazine that Hulk won’t be in the movie. Although some fans might be disappointed, Ruffalo clarified that he isn’t finished playing Bruce Banner, and he’s open to returning if Marvel comes up with exciting new storylines for the Hulk (according to ComicBook.com).
Narratively, Hulk’s absence isn’t unexpected. Stories from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day arc indicate that events could leave Bruce Banner emotionally unstable. This instability would make it hard for him to work effectively with the Avengers or participate in a complex battle against someone like Doctor Doom.
I’ve always been a huge Hulk fan, but it’s a little frustrating to see where his story stands. He burst onto the scene with his own movie way back when, but he’s never really gotten a proper follow-up. Instead, he’s usually part of the bigger team-up adventures. Don’t get me wrong, those appearances are great, and they’ve definitely made him popular, but I, like a lot of fans, feel like we haven’t really seen his full potential explored. It just feels like his story hasn’t gotten the development it deserves.
The next Avengers movie, titled Doomsday, will be directed by the Russo Brothers and written by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron. It’s scheduled to come out on December 18th, and another film, Avengers: Secret Wars, is planned for release in December 2027.
Hulk not appearing in the Doomsday event might mean Marvel is saving him for a future story where he’s the main focus, instead of just being part of a larger team.
