The biggest disappointment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy is how it mishandled its iconic characters. Star Wars originally thrived thanks to the huge success of A New Hope and its follow-ups, and a major part of that success was the perfect casting of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher as Luke, Han, and Leia.

The latest three Star Wars films faced immense pressure and criticism. Though they offered impressive visuals and solid acting, the sequel trilogy frequently stumbled in explaining its story decisions. During the first Actors Roundtable hosted by The Hollywood Reporter in 2026, Mark Hamill and five other actors discussed who they’d most like to collaborate with. Hamill immediately said he wished he’d had the chance to act with Harrison Ford in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, as they never filmed scenes together after Return of the Jedi.

I only appeared briefly in the sequel trilogy, just two cameos. I suggested to the filmmakers that it would be great if all three of us – me, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher – could have one final scene together, even just for thirty seconds. J.J. Abrams explained that the story wasn’t focused on Luke Skywalker anymore. I pointed out that while Star Wars wasn’t about Obi-Wan Kenobi, Alec Guinness still played a vital role. Ultimately, though, my suggestions weren’t taken.

Given the story’s focus on the Skywalker family, particularly in the most recent films, many fans expected to see Luke, Leia, and Han together on screen again. A short scene reuniting them would have been incredibly meaningful and a fitting tribute to the history of Star Wars. Sadly, that moment never happened and remains just an idea.

Mark Hamill made a good point about the story itself. Star Wars isn’t about just Luke or Obi-Wan; it’s a larger story where older characters help the new ones. Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan was crucial without stealing the spotlight from Luke. Bringing back the original Star Wars trio would have strengthened the idea of passing the torch to a new generation. By sidelining Han, Luke, and Leia, the sequel trilogy actually became weaker.

As a big fan of these classic movies, I’ve noticed a trend over the last ten years: studios really love bringing back the original casts for sequels and reboots. We’ve seen it with Jurassic World, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Creed, all the Marvel movies, and even Terminator: Dark Fate – they went all out to get those familiar faces back, though it didn’t always work. What’s weird is that Star Wars had a perfect chance to do the same thing with its original stars, a chance that felt totally natural, but they just…didn’t take it!

As a huge Star Wars fan, it always felt like a missed opportunity that Luke, Han, and Leia weren’t truly reunited on screen in the sequel trilogy. They all came back, but never shared those iconic scenes together. Now, it’s heartbreaking to realize that will never happen. With Carrie Fisher gone, a real return for Leia is sadly impossible, and Harrison Ford has made it clear he’s moved on from the franchise. It’s a lost chance that we’ll never get back, and it really stings.
