Macross Finally Gets First-Time U.S. Release After 40 Years

The company is expanding with new projects, and the re-release of their original, famous film is just the beginning of a larger celebration.

Anime Expo 2026 will be the first place in North America to show the original 1984 film, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? With many important people from the anime world attending, Anime Expo is truly the best place to celebrate the history of the industry. This exciting news follows the recent release of several Macross anime series in Western countries, introducing the beloved story to a new generation of fans.

The First Macross Movie is Being Screened in North America for the First Time

Anime Expo 2026 will be held from July 2nd to 5th. The event will kick off with a celebration of mecha anime on the 2nd, and conclude with more mecha-themed content on the 5th. BIGWEST is hosting a Macross panel on July 2nd at 1:00 p.m. PDT, but specific details about the panel are still limited.

The future and lasting impact of the franchise will likely be central themes, particularly given its growing international fanbase over the last year. Anime Expo 2026 won’t just focus on the newer series, though – fans will also have a chance to revisit a classic installment from 1984.

The classic anime film Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? will have its first official Western screening on July 5th at 12:00 pm PDT. The film has been difficult to release outside of Japan due to complicated legal issues. It’s essentially a movie version of the original Macross anime, and its footage was also used to create the series Robotech. Because of these connections, the different versions couldn’t be released in the same territories until now.

Hulu started streaming several Macross anime series in 2025, but the very first series and its movie weren’t included. This release suggests that licensing restrictions are starting to ease, and attendees of Anime Expo 2026 may be among the first to see the results of these changes.

In addition to the Macross happenings, Anime Expo will host a number of prominent figures from the anime, manga, and video game worlds. These guests include Hiroyuki Watanabe, formerly the editor-in-chief of Monthly Shonen Ace and currently an executive at Kadokawa, plus voice actors Masakazu Morita, Machico, and Daisuke Hirose. These voice actors have contributed to popular series like Bleach, Uma Musume, and the upcoming 2025 Hatsune Miku anime film.

Bandai is famous for its Mobile Suit Gundam series. It’s also strongly linked to the Transformers franchise – the original VF-1 Valkyrie toy was actually used as the basis for the iconic Autobot character, Jetfire.
