Be warned, this article contains major spoilers for the first season of M.I.A.! The show’s creators, Bill Dubuque and Karen Campbell, have revealed that Etta’s journey for revenge will continue in future seasons of M.I.A.
I was immediately hooked by Peacock’s new thriller, M.I.A. It opens with a shocking scene: Shannon Gisela, playing Etta, witnesses her entire family—smugglers working for a dangerous drug cartel—being killed after a deal goes wrong. What follows is a gripping revenge story as Etta sets out to find the twelve men responsible. Luckily, she’s not alone. She finds help from a few unexpected allies—Lovely and Samuel—and reconnects with family she hadn’t seen in years, including her aunt Carmen (her mother’s twin!) and a former agent named Lena. It’s a fast-paced ride from the start.
Before the show launched, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Bill Dubuque and Karen Campbell about their plans for the crime thriller. When Hermanns asked about the possibility of future seasons of M.I.A., Palmer hinted at details without revealing too much, and Dubuque jokingly asked that everyone not tempt fate.
Palmer later assured everyone that the show has plenty of material for at least five more seasons. She remembered being immediately impressed with the original script, believing it could easily support five strong, compelling seasons – longer than Dubuque’s run with Ozark. She also hinted that they have exciting plans for the future, playfully acknowledging and appreciating the interviewer’s enthusiasm for ambitious ideas and their investment in the show.
The show M.I.A. initially seemed like a classic revenge story, similar to the John Wick spin-off Ballerina. Etta planned to use her incredible memory and her friends to find the people who killed her family. But things quickly became more complicated when she met her long-lost aunt and discovered her new boyfriend was connected to the dangerous Rojas cartel.
At the end of the first season of M.I.A., it’s clear the show could continue for many seasons to come. Etta hasn’t finished her hit list – in fact, she added to it, most notably targeting Carolina Rojas, who was desperately trying to secure funding for her high-end Abaka project. This ambition led Carolina to kill Judith, the aunt of Lovely and Samuel, and put herself in Etta’s dangerous path.
Targeting Carolina will be complicated for Gisela in the future, because Carolina is the mother of Etta’s new boyfriend, Matt. Although Matt agreed to give Etta space to heal and let their relationship develop naturally, his connection to Carolina could potentially make him an obstacle for Gisela instead of a helper.
A key storyline for the second season of M.I.A. revolves around Etta’s decision to spare the life of Elias, a member of the Rojases’ crew, and bring him into her own group. She intends to use his inside knowledge to dismantle the cartel and establish herself as a new criminal leader. The show’s creator, Dubuque, has hinted that the series will follow someone starting with very little power and ultimately becoming influential. While Etta and Elias will likely have a difficult relationship at first, his potential involvement in a serious attack could lead him to stay with her and contribute to the plans for future seasons.
