Season 4 of Dark Winds features a recognizable actress, Linda Hamilton, but her appearance is quite different from her recent work. The season brings back familiar characters like Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), alongside some new additions to the cast.
Franka Potente and Titus Welliver join the cast as Irene, a secretive German assassin, and Dominic McNair, a businessman. By the end of the first episode of season 4, it’s apparent Irene will be a key villain this season, but she wasn’t the only new face in “Baptism by Fire.”

While helping a stranded motorist, Leaphorn unexpectedly meets Barbara Sena, the retired wife of Acting Chief Gordo Sena from the Scarborough Police Department. Actress Linda Hamilton, known for her role in The Terminator, plays Barbara as a kind and approachable woman who attempts to place Leaphorn as he fixes their flat tire.
During their talk, it’s increasingly obvious that Barbara is experiencing dementia, as she confuses Leaphorn with his father. Gordo shares with Leaphorn how difficult it’s been coping with his wife’s diagnosis since she retired. The scene is surprisingly touching, and resonates with the actor’s own personal experiences outside of work.
How Linda Hamilton’s Mother Inspired The Dark Winds Character

In an interview with People Magazine, Adrienne Barbeau explained that playing Barbara was both difficult and meaningful because her own mother lived with dementia for 25 years. She shared that seeing Barbara’s shoes on set instantly brought back memories, as her mother wore similar shoes from that same time period.
I’ve been really impressed with Dark Winds – it’s one of those shows that handles tough topics with a real sensitivity you don’t often see in crime dramas. I read that Jill Hennessy, who plays Barbara, brought a lot of personal experience to the role, drawing on what her mother and friends went through with dementia to make her performance so believable and moving. It really shows the care they put into everything.
Before Dark Winds, Linda Hamilton Appeared In Stranger Things Season 5

Before joining the cast of Dark Winds for its fourth season, Hamilton had a role in a very different Netflix series, portraying a starkly contrasting character. In the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, Hamilton played Dr. Kay, a cruel scientist who served as the main human antagonist.
Despite the massive popularity of Stranger Things season 5, Dr. Kay’s departure felt surprisingly low-key. Many fans were upset by her character’s fate in the finale, as she seemed to be completely overlooked after Eleven made her sacrifice.
Many viewers were disappointed with how the show ended for Hamilton, a prominent actor they expected to have a significant role – perhaps even as the main villain, similar to Vecna. While he had a few scenes with Eleven and Hopper at the beginning, his character quickly became unimportant and was ultimately written out before the finale concluded.
While the blockbuster star’s previous guest appearance wasn’t very satisfying, it was a pleasant surprise to see the crime drama give Linda Hamilton a much more interesting and unexpected part. After consistently playing tough, unyielding characters, her appearance in season 4 of Dark Winds is truly a standout performance.
