The Academy Award-winning actress has appeared in a wide variety of films. Several of those projects were produced by Harvey Weinstein, who was later convicted of crimes.
In a recent interview with The Radio Times, renowned actress Judi Dench discussed Harvey Weinstein, the convicted rapist and sexual assailant. While acknowledging the numerous accusations of misconduct against him, Dench questioned whether he might be ready to be forgiven.
During the interview, Judi Dench discussed both Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. She shared that she’s been friends with Spacey for many years and mentioned, “Kevin has been cleared of wrongdoing, and we actually text each other.”
The actress shared that she’d seen footage of Harvey Weinstein using two canes, and it made her reflect. She explained, ‘I knew Harvey well, both personally and professionally, and thankfully, I never had any negative experiences with him.’
She added, “I imagine he’s done his time… I don’t know, to me it’s personal – forgiveness.”
When asked who her celebrity crush was, she surprisingly mentioned Johnny Depp. He was recently involved in a highly publicized and difficult legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Although he was ultimately cleared of the accusations, the situation caused him to lose some acting roles. She then pointed to a framed earring, claiming, “That’s one he bit off my ear while we were filming Pirates of the Caribbean.”
The actress made a quick appearance in the opening scene of the 2011 film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. In that scene, Captain Jack Sparrow unexpectedly jumps into her carriage, kisses her neck, and steals an earring, leading to a memorable line: “Is that it?” She and Sparrow had worked together before, in the 2000 film Chocolat, which was also produced by Miramax.
Judi Dench publicly criticized Harvey Weinstein when the first allegations against him surfaced during the #MeToo movement. She acknowledged he had supported her career for two decades but stated she was shocked and horrified by the offenses, expressing sympathy for the victims and strong support for those who came forward.
In 2019, the actress spoke about the situation and asked The Radio Times, “Will we simply ignore all the films Harvey produced?”
Harvey Weinstein Replied to Judi Dench’s Words
Judi Dench appeared in multiple films produced by Harvey Weinstein, including the 1998 hit Shakespeare in Love and the 2013 film Philomena. After Dench spoke out, Weinstein released a statement through his representative on December 8th. He said he has always admired her, describing her as a remarkable person who significantly helped his career. He also noted he has been in prison for over six and a half years, including a year and a half at Rikers Island, which counts as double the time served.
He explained that he was wrongly accused and that many of the things reported about him were proving to be false. He expressed his appreciation for the support he’d received and simply wanted to go home to his family and children.
