Another tale of swashbuckling, curses, and treasure is apparently not dead in the water yet.
The last Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out in 2017, and people have been wondering what Disney would do next with the series ever since. There’s been talk of both a sixth movie and a spin-off story, and a lot of discussion about whether Johnny Depp would be back. Now, reports indicate that Disney might be combining some of these different ideas into one project.
According to industry insider The InSneider, Disney’s new leadership – CEO Josh D’Amaro and president/CCO Dana Walden – are making a Pirates of the Caribbean movie a high priority. The rumored sixth film, Pirates 6, is expected to feel similar to the original movies but with a more contemporary style and a reduced budget. The story will reportedly follow the son of Jack Sparrow, alongside a new character played by Margot Robbie.
According to Jeff Sneider, Krysty Wilson-Cairns, an Oscar nominee, is writing the script. While Disney hasn’t confirmed this report, it suggests that the previously announced Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff starring Margot Robbie might now be combined with a sixth main installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
The Pirates of the Caribbean movies, based on the popular Disneyland ride, center around the exciting and often chaotic adventures of Johnny Depp’s character, Captain Jack Sparrow. The films also feature a consistent group of actors, including Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley, alongside memorable performances from guest stars like Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Chow Yun-fat.
It seems Johnny Depp might not reprise his role in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, with reports suggesting his character could be replaced by his son. Recent updates also include the original director, Gore Verbinski, stating he doesn’t plan to return, while Orlando Bloom has expressed his hope that the original cast will reunite for future films.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is struggling, and it will be difficult to regain its former popularity. The original 2003 film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, was a huge hit, but later movies weren’t as successful, and the series has been declining in quality and viewership.
The latest Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), received a very low 30% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst for the series so far. While it earned almost $800 million globally, its production cost was estimated between $230 and $320 million. Recent reports hint at a significant change in direction for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but it remains to be seen whether it can return to its previous success.
