Apple TV announced that the movie Matchbox will be available to stream starting October 9th. Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for Extraction, the film is based on the classic Matchbox toy cars made by Mattel.
The movie stars John Cena, along with Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris (known from WandaVision), and Arturo Castro. Matt Westbrook (who worked on Extraction II) consulted on the story.
Apple TV announced the show Matchbox will premiere soon and shared three new photos, which you can view below.
A Globetrotting Adventure
Apple TV describes Matchbox as a thrilling adventure following a group of lifelong friends. Their quiet lives are turned upside down when Sean, a CIA agent and their childhood leader who disappeared years ago, unexpectedly returns home and accidentally pulls them into a high-stakes, worldwide mission to save the planet.
This Apple Original Film is a collaboration between Skydance Media and Mattel Films. It’s directed and executive produced by Hargrave, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger of Skydance, Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz of Mattel Films, and Jules Daly producing. Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassen are also executive producers for Matchbox.
The movie is inspired by the Matchbox toy brand, which began in 1953 with Lesney Products. Jack Odell, a car lover, created the first Matchbox car as a small toy his daughter could easily take to school – it had to fit inside a matchbox! Mattel bought the Matchbox brand in 1997.
Matchbox the Movie will hit Apple TV on Oct. 9.
