James Gunn’s DC Universe Is Officially Fixing Its The Flash Problem

As a huge DC fan, I’ve been keeping a close eye on what James Gunn is doing with the new DC Universe, and I’m starting to think he’s got a really smart plan for The Flash. Honestly, when I think of a great live-action Flash, it’s not the guy from the old DCEU movies that comes to mind – it’s definitely Grant Gustin from the Arrowverse series. He really nailed the character, and I’m hoping Gunn finds a way to incorporate that version of The Flash into what he’s building.

Grant Gustin portrayed Barry Allen/The Flash for nine seasons on television and in several crossover events. Many fans are hoping James Gunn will include Gustin’s version of the character in the first phase of the new DC Universe. While The Flash appeared in a 2023 movie starring Ezra Miller, the film wasn’t successful. Following that, plans for future Flash projects within the DCU were put on hold, but there’s a possibility they could be revisited soon.

James Gunn’s DC Universe Is Slowly Setting Up The Flash

James Gunn hasn’t said exactly when a new version of The Flash might appear in the DC Universe. However, it looks like they’re already subtly preparing for that reveal with an upcoming project. Following the positive reception to Superman, DC quickly greenlit a sequel. In addition to the movie, a Superman spin-off series is also being developed.

The upcoming series will center around Skyler Gisondo’s character, Jimmy Olsen, who was a standout in James Gunn’s Superman film. Other reporters from the Daily Planet will likely make appearances, excluding the main characters Clark Kent (played by David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan). The show will be presented in the style of a true-crime documentary, and the first season will focus on the villain Gorilla Grodd.

How The DCU’s Approach Is Perfect For The Flash

Gorilla Grodd is a major enemy of The Flash in DC Comics and has been a popular villain in the DC television shows. Now, with Grodd appearing in the Jimmy Olsen series, it seems likely this is the beginning of a larger story that will eventually lead to a Flash-focused storyline.

James Gunn has a good opportunity to gradually rebuild The Flash’s world by featuring Central City, classic Flash villains, and potentially Iris West in various DC Universe projects. Given the disappointing performance of the 2023 The Flash movie and the controversies surrounding actor Ezra Miller, pausing development on the hero – as Gunn previously stated – is a sensible approach.

With characters like Gorilla Grodd potentially appearing in a future Superman series, there’s an opportunity to bring them all together in a new The Flash project – either a movie or a TV show. I enjoy Grant Gustin’s performance as The Flash and wouldn’t mind seeing him return. However, introducing Wally West as The Flash could also be a good fit, especially now that John Stewart is taking over as the main Green Lantern.
