James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe now features five different superhero teams. Although the iconic Justice League hasn’t formed yet in this new universe, other groups are already coming together to defend the various worlds being created. And with more projects planned, especially two coming out in 2025, the number of teams is only expected to grow.
In Season 2, Episode 3 of *Peacemaker*, a new team called the Top Trio was introduced as part of the DC Universe. This team is actually the Smith family from an alternate Earth, and they can be reached through a special portal hidden in Chris Smith’s closet.
In the DC Universe, Peacemaker, created by Chris Smith, teams up with his father, known as the Blue Dragon, and his brother, Captain Triumph, to protect Earth. It’s unclear what their long-term goals are, but they’re the newest addition to the DCU, joining four other established teams already in action.
All New Teams Introduced in James Gunn’s DCU
Task Force X
The DC Universe brought the team known as Task Force X – a group of antiheroes and villains – to life in both the 2016 film *Suicide Squad* and the 2021 film *The Suicide Squad*. In the newer movie, the team was sent to the island nation of Corto Maltese on a mission to destroy Project Starfish, ultimately defeating and killing Starro the Commander.
The 2021 film showcased Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie), Peacemaker (John Cena), and Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) as part of its team. Despite around a dozen members dying during the movie, the Suicide Squad could return in future installments.
Creature Commandos (Task Force M)
The first project in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe was the adult-animated series *Creature Commandos*, which premiered on HBO Max in December 2024. Continuing the tone established by *The Suicide Squad*, the series follows this team as they’re dispatched to Pokolistan to safeguard Princess Ilana Rostovic from the dangerous Circe.
The team, led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), features characters like Bride (Indira Varma), Frankenstein (David Harbour), Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Weasel (Sean Gunn), and G.I. Robot. Though the team’s members will change in Season 2, the show will continue to follow their missions, still overseen by Amanda Waller and Rick Flag Sr.
Justice Gang
Before the Justice League officially appears in the DC Universe, the first film, *Superman*, briefly introduces a team called the Justice Gang. Led by Maxwell Lord, this group appears early in the movie to assist Superman in his fight against Lex Luthor.
The team in the upcoming Superman movie features Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific. Both Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner reappear in the first episode of *Peacemaker* Season 2, where Chris Smith interviews to join them and Maxwell Lord as part of the team.
Green Lantern Corps
James Gunn plans to introduce a new live-action Green Lantern Corps into the DC Universe in 2026, marking the first attempt since the 2011 film, which wasn’t well-received. The story will begin with a series called *Lanterns*, bringing the iconic green rings and extraordinary abilities of the Corps to Earth and adding a cosmic scale to the DCU.
I’m so excited for the *Lanterns* show! It’s officially confirmed we’re going to see Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, and apparently Hal will be mentoring John when he first joins the Green Lantern Corps. The show is promising to introduce a whole bunch of other Lanterns too, which is awesome – it’s going to really flesh out the lore of the Corps on TV when it hits HBO Max in 2026. I can’t wait!
The second season of *Peacemaker*, starring John Cena, Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Steve Agee, and Frank Grillo, is now available on HBO Max. As the third release in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe – following *Creature Commandos* and *Superman* – this season sees Peacemaker continuing his journey to become a hero. He’s juggling adventures in different dimensions and seeking revenge for Rick Flag Sr. The first three episodes are currently streaming.
