James Gunn Offers Surprising DCU Update On Idris Elba’s Suicide Squad Character

Elba first appeared in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in Gunn’s 2021 movie, The Suicide Squad, playing the well-known gun-wielding supervillain. Although elements from Gunn’s Suicide Squad have been integrated into his new DC Universe, Elba’s character has yet to be incorporated.

Initially, it was thought that the debut of the DCU would mark a fresh start for Elba’s character within the DCEU, effectively writing him off along with other elements from its old on-screen universe. However, there’s a possibility this may not hold true, as James Gunn hinted at Bloodsport potentially reappearing in the new DCU.

The most recent rumors indicated that the sharpshooter from DC Comics was expected to have a significant role in the future, as per Elba’s claims. However, this was before James Gunn and his co-CEO at DC Studios, Peter Safran, took charge of the brand and initiated their new reboot of the DC Universe.

Essential aspects from “The Suicide Squad” movie have been integrated into the DC Universe (DCU), replacing the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Notable inclusions are characters such as Peacemaker and Amanda Waller, along with significant storylines like the demise of Rick Flag Jr., portrayed by Joel Kinnaman.

In “The Suicide Squad,” Idris Elba worked alongside Margot Robbie, John Cena, and Sylvester Stallone. He portrayed the renowned DC Comics villain Bloodsport. The movie was helmed by James Gunn, who is now one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios. In this action-packed film, a team of formidable DC villains, considered disposable, embarked on a perilous mission to eliminate the enigmatic Staro from a distant South American island.

How Could Bloodsport Come Back in the DCU?

If James Gunn desires Idris Elba’s Bloodsport in the DC Universe, he can certainly make it happen. Given that Gunn now has full creative control over the DC brand on screen, there are no obstacles preventing him from incorporating another character from his Suicide Squad movie into his new on-screen narrative continuity for the DC Universe.

It is just a matter of finding the right project to fit Bloodsport back into the DC puzzle. 

In Gunn’s new DC Universe, some characters from the DCEU remain consistent, featuring the same actor and character (such as Peacemaker and Waller). However, there are also fresh twists – for instance, actors like Nathan Fillion, who were previously in the DCEU, are now portraying entirely different DC Comics characters within this new universe.

If Bloodsport/Elba were to make a comeback, it’s probably safe to assume that he would reappear again. Given that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn remains in limbo within the Suicide Squad, there might be an opportunity for these returning antagonists to join together as a group.

Since the forthcoming Waller series is essentially an extension of the tale from The Suicide Squad film, it could be reasonable to expect a character like Elba’s Bloodsport to appear in it if he was going to.

This situation might potentially result in another “Suicide Squad” film, possibly, or a standalone movie focusing on Bloodsport, where he could be portrayed as either the protagonist or antagonist.
