James Gunn is planning a new HBO series based on a DC movie from 2005. I’m so excited to hear the new heads at DC Studios are really building something special! Apparently, they’re developing a TV series based on V for Vendetta for HBO, which is one of the most highly-regarded graphic novels DC has ever put out. This is fantastic news for fans like me!
The upcoming DC project is inspired by the popular comic created by Alan Moore, David Lloyd, and Tony Weare. James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Chad King will executive produce, and Pete Jackson, known for his BAFTA award, is writing the script.
The graphic novel V for Vendetta was made into a popular movie in 2005, starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. While it received a good score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, it has since gained a dedicated following and become a cult favorite.
This story centers on a rebel fighting against a brutally controlling government in a future world. He’s trying to start a revolution and free people from its oppression.
I’ve always been struck by how much of a mark V for Vendetta has left on our culture. It’s incredible to see that Guy Fawkes mask – the one worn by the mysterious V – everywhere you look, even showing up in another HBO show, Pennyworth! It really proves how much that film resonated with people.
How Does V for Vendetta Fit Into James Gunn’s DC Plans?
As a DC fan, I’m really excited about everything James Gunn is building with DC Studios. What’s interesting about V for Vendetta is that it’s different from all the other projects he’s announced so far. Everything else has ties to existing DC Comics stories, whether it’s part of the main universe or a separate ‘Elseworlds’ tale. But V for Vendetta isn’t based on anything from the DC Comics world – it’s completely original to this slate, which is a cool change of pace!
The acclaimed graphic novel first appeared in 1989 as a standalone story, originally published under DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. Vertigo was DC’s label for comics aimed at mature readers, and it was home to popular titles like The Sandman, Swamp Thing, and Hellblazer.
V for Vendetta has the potential to be a special project within James Gunn’s plans for DC. It could allow DC Studios to explore a wider range of DC stories and characters, beyond just the traditional superhero universe they’ve been building.
