As a huge Stephen King fan, I was really moved by this week’s episode of It: Welcome to Derry. It beautifully captures one of the most heartbreaking stories from his books and brings it to life on screen.
Readers of Stephen King’s original novel, It, will likely remember “The Black Spot” and find its story heartbreaking. In the 1986 book (and in the 1962 setting of It: Welcome to Derry), The Black Spot was a community center and safe space for Black soldiers and residents. Tragically, it was firebombed by a white supremacist group called The Main Legion of White Decency, with the intention of killing everyone inside.
Pennywise didn’t start the initial attack, but it definitely grew stronger because of it. It appeared as a giant bird and used the intense fear and pain from the event to empower itself. The strong feelings of hatred that caused the attack also created the perfect conditions for Pennywise to flourish.
This week’s episode of It: Welcome to Derry, titled “The Black Spot,” featured a disturbing event that played out for viewers. Creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti recently told TV Insider about the challenges of presenting such a traumatic and racially sensitive moment to a new audience, and the significant responsibility they felt to handle the tragedy with care.
Andy highlighted that The Black Spot was a crucial element of the horror show’s first season, calling it the point where the story truly began. He explained that the entire first season led up to this event, and the subsequent two seasons will explore what happens after the attack.
He also emphasized the importance of staying true to King’s story. He really wanted to highlight that the people of Derry were capable of just as much evil as Pennywise, and perhaps even more – a key theme of the novel.
The Black Spot was a central event in our story from the very beginning. While the story continues after it, the Black Spot serves as a major turning point and one of the most significant, dramatic events. We designed the show to have three seasons, each culminating in a big moment built around these key events, and the Black Spot was that moment for this part of the story. It felt like a finish line for us, and everything throughout the season builds towards it – all the storylines come together there. That’s why it was so crucial to the narrative.
We also need to acknowledge the significance of the Black Spot incident in the story – it’s a truly tragic event. This horrible act wasn’t committed by It, but by the people of Derry themselves. It adds another layer to the book’s central message: humans are just as capable of terrible acts as any monster.
The first season of It: Welcome to Derry will conclude on December 14, 2025, with the final episode airing at 9 PM Eastern Time and 6 PM Pacific Time on HBO. You can watch all previous episodes now on HBO Max.
