A new TV drama based on the classic Robin Hood story aired on MGM+ in 2025. The show, simply titled Robin Hood, features Jack Patten as Rob Locksley, Lauren McQueen as Marian, Lydia Peckham as Priscilla of Nottingham, Connie Nielsen as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Filming for the first season is complete, and the stars and a co-creator have discussed whether there will be a second season. However, some are worried about its renewal, given that MGM+ recently cancelled The Winter King, a series focused on King Arthur.
Starring Iain De Caestecker, known from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Winter King reimagined the story of King Arthur with familiar characters like Nimue, Morgan, Merlin, and Uther. Despite having potential for further seasons, the show was unfortunately cancelled after only one season. While quite different in tone, The Winter King and the new Robin Hood series, both streaming on MGM+ and focusing on British legends, share enough similarities that I’m worried about the future of Robin Hood.
Despite the first season consisting of ten episodes, the main actors believe there’s potential for their characters’ stories to continue, as they shared with the Manchester Evening News.
- Lauren McQueen: “I think the season ends quite interestingly for every single character. I think it could develop, but we just wanted to do the best we could for season 1.”
- Jack Patten: “We would love to do a [Season] 2. That would be awesome. Jonathan [English] and John [Glenn] just wrote awesome characters. As actors we love an arc, you can’t ask for much more.”
According to Patten, Jonathan English and John Glenn, the writers who started the story in Season 1, both have extensive experience on long-running TV shows. English spent several years working on The Outpost and The Ark, and Glenn was an executive producer and showrunner for over thirty episodes of SEAL Team starring David Boreanaz. This background suggests they could successfully guide Robin Hood through multiple seasons. Glenn recently discussed this possibility with Tech Radar.
A second season is definitely possible! We’ve already started developing it, though we haven’t officially ordered it yet. We’re actively working on making it happen.
You can now stream all ten episodes of the first season of Robin Hood on MGM+. Plus, Amazon Prime subscribers can watch the first episode for free.
