Summer fun isn’t over! There’s more to Belly’s story, and we’ll finally get to see it unfold in a movie based on *The Summer I Turned Pretty*. Now that we’ve seen Belly and Conrad find happiness together, and as we look forward to going back to the beach, let’s share everything we know about what happens next.
What Jenny Han Has Said About The Movie’s Release Date
Although there’s no confirmed release date for *The Summer I Turned Pretty* movie yet, Jenny Han has stated when fans shouldn’t expect it. In an interview with Variety, she confirmed it won’t be released in 2026. When asked if it would be out by next year, she said:
I don’t believe so. We haven’t started filming yet, so I can’t say for sure if it will be released next year.
She explained that she needs time to carefully develop the project. She also mentioned it would allow the actors to mature a bit more. Han ultimately wants the show to feel distinct from the film, and she’s happy to have that creative distance.
Han recently told Today that she’s completed a first draft of the script, meaning the movie is progressing well and likely to be made.
What Will The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Be About?

The news that a movie was being made based on one of Prime Video’s most popular series came with a message from Jenny Han, the show’s creator, about how she imagined the story of Belly would end. She shared that she wanted to:
There’s one major part of Belly’s story still to tell, and I always felt it deserved a film to really do it justice. I’m incredibly thankful to Prime Video for believing in my vision and allowing me to share this last piece with the fans.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced, the show left out a key scene from the book, *We’ll Always Have Summer* – the one showing Belly and Conrad immediately after their wedding. Many fans believe this wedding is the “big milestone” the author has hinted at, but that remains unconfirmed.
Han recently told Elle UK that the upcoming movie will show Belly and Conrad’s relationship developing further, since it really began after the show finished. Hopefully, the movie will focus on their happiness and relationship throughout the entire story.
Who Will Be Back From The Original Summer I Turned Pretty Cast?

Considering the feedback and the movie’s promotional image—which we’ll cover shortly—it’s highly likely that Lola Tung and Christopher Briney will be back as Belly and Conrad in the next *The Summer I Turned Pretty* film.
It’s still uncertain who will return for the next season, but it would be surprising if any of the original cast members from *The Summer I Turned Pretty* didn’t come back. I’m pretty confident we’ll see Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah, Rain Spencer as Taylor, and Sean Kaufman as Steven again.
We can likely expect to see Jackie Chung and Colin Ferguson return as Belly and Steven’s parents, Laurel and John, and Tom Everett Scott as Conrad and Jeremiah’s dad, Adam. It also seems reasonable to anticipate Rachel Blanchard appearing again as the Fisher brothers’ mother, Susannah, through flashback scenes.
I’m really hoping to see Isabella Briggs reprise her role as Steven’s colleague and become a love interest for Jeremiah’s character, Denise. I’d also love to see David Iacono return as Cam Cameron sometime soon.
Jenny Han Is Directing And Co-Writing The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie

Just like the television series, Jenny Han – the author of the original books – will continue to be heavily involved in the adaptation. When the movie was first announced, it was confirmed she would both co-write the screenplay with Sarah Kucserka and direct the film herself.
You can be confident this movie is in excellent hands with these two women leading the project. Han is a true expert, having not only written the original books and created the show, but also writing several episodes, including the very last one, titled “At Last.” Kucserka also has significant experience, having written three episodes and served as a co-showrunner for Seasons 2 and 3.
I was really struck by Season 3, Episode 5 – “Last Dance” – it’s a fantastic episode and really focuses on Conrad’s story. Han actually directed it, which makes a lot of sense considering how beautifully they handled his arc.
I’m confident this movie will be a great continuation of the series, offering a satisfying conclusion to the fantastic three seasons we’ve enjoyed.
How Will We Be Able To Watch The Movie?

As expected, Amazon revealed details about the upcoming movie. The leaders of Amazon MGM Studios’ film, streaming, and television divisions expressed their enthusiasm about collaborating with Han on the project.
The announcement didn’t specify how the movie will be released. It will likely be available to stream on Prime Video right away, similar to the show. While a limited theatrical release would be enjoyable, it seems unlikely.

Want to keep watching *The Summer I Turned Pretty*? You’ll need an Amazon Prime subscription, as it’s available on Prime Video. Amazon Prime Video also offers many other great original shows and movies. Subscriptions start at $14.99 a month, and you can try it free for 30 days. See the deal here.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Was Announced Right When The Series Finale Dropped

Not long after the Season 3 finale of The Summer I Turned Prettydropped on the 2025 TV schedule, the movie was announced. From the episode’s premiere in Paris, we got to see a photo on Instagram of Lola Tung and Christopher Briney posing in front of a sign that looked kind of like a reel of film and said “The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie.”
But there were clues beforehand. The finale concluded with pictures of Belly and Conrad celebrating Christmas together in France, followed by a letter from the author, Han, which is included below.

The author expressed gratitude to her fans and looked back on the show’s three seasons. She concluded by writing:
Maybe we’ll meet again one summer in Cousins. Until then – all of my love always, Jenny.
We didn’t have to wait long to learn when we’d meet again—the movie’s release date was announced that very night.
I know we’ll be revisiting the Cousins beach house again, and honestly, I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see what happens with Belly, Conrad, and everyone else as the story continues this summer.
