Viola Davis’s character, Amanda Waller, is unique in that she’s appeared in both the old DCEU and the new DCU. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently discussed what’s next for Waller, including whether the role will be played by a different actor in future DCU projects.
James Gunn hopes for Viola Davis to return as Amanda Waller
In an interview with Deadline, James Gunn confirmed that Viola Davis is still planned to return as Amanda Waller in the new DC Universe, despite recent changes.
The director of Guardians of the Galaxy expressed strong hope that Viola Davis would reprise her role as Waller. He shared that they have a wonderful working relationship and he considers her one of the most talented actors he’s ever collaborated with.
A TV series focusing on Amanda Waller has been planned for the DC Universe for a while, but there haven’t been any positive updates about its progress lately.
At the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, James Gunn mentioned that while they’ve started developing a series focused on Viola Davis’s character, Amanda Waller, other projects have become more urgent. He explained that progress on the Waller series has been slower, but he’s excited to see Davis reprise the role, complete with her signature floral dresses, and deliver a standout performance.
Viola Davis first played the tough government agent Amanda Waller in the 2016 film *Suicide Squad*. She reprised the role in the 2021 film *The Suicide Squad* and later provided the voice for the animated version of Waller in *Creature Commandos* (2024). Davis also made brief, uncredited appearances as Waller in *Black Adam* (2022) and the *Peacemaker* series.
Although the original interview with James Gunn on Deadline has been removed from their website, you can still watch it on Yahoo News.
