Mark Harmon has returned as the voice of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the NCIS: Origins prequel and even appeared in two episodes. However, he hasn’t been seen on the original NCIS since leaving during Season 19’s “Great Wide Open.” In that episode, Gibbs chose to stay in Alaska after completing a mission with Timothy McGee (played by Sean Murray), saying goodbye before McGee returned to Washington D.C. The characters haven’t spoken since, but Sean Murray recently shared with TopMob his hopes for a future reunion between them.
Following a discussion about the recent “Page-Turner” episode of the show, which aired on Tuesday and featured a nostalgic moment for dedicated viewers with Jessica Knight’s appearance, I asked Sean Murray what he thought Gibbs and McGee would talk about if they had a chance to meet again. Murray began his answer by saying:
I believe Gibbs would want McGee to be true to himself and act with integrity, guided by the principles Gibbs instilled in him. McGee deeply craves Gibbs’s approval, likely stemming from a difficult relationship with his own father. He never had a strong father figure until he met Gibbs, and that connection means the world to him.
As a big fan of the NCIS universe, I was really struck by something during the recent crossover with NCIS: Origins. Vera Strickland mentioned to McGee that she’d been talking to Gibbs, and Gibbs apparently told her how proud he is of McGee. It got me thinking about how much Mark Harmon and Sean Murray’s characters grew over almost 20 years on screen. It wasn’t just a professional relationship, like we saw with Tony, Ziva, and others – Gibbs and McGee really became close. You could feel that connection in their final scene together in “Great Wide Open,” and it was incredibly moving.

Paramount+ offers access to the entire NCIS universe, including the original series and its spin-offs. Plans start at $7.99 per month, with an ad-free option available for $12.99 per month. You can also save money with an annual subscription at $59.99. Check out the deal here!
Considering Sean Murray’s comments about their father-son dynamic, it’s evident McGee still deeply respects Gibbs, even after twenty years. This naturally means he cares a lot about what Gibbs thinks of him. As Murray put it:
McGee continues to excel, and a lot of that stems from the confidence Gibbs instilled in him. Over time, we’ve watched him improve, and he probably still seeks Gibbs’s approval, maybe even just asking, ‘How am I doing?’ Gibbs has always been a guiding force for McGee, a sort of moral compass.

Will we ever see Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Timothy McGee work together again? It’s uncertain. Currently, Gibbs is living a quiet, secluded life in Naktok Bay, though he did take in a stray dog during a recent crossover episode. He’s difficult to reach – Vera Strickland hasn’t revealed how she contacts him – but Gibbs was shown fixing a CB radio, suggesting a possible communication method. Mark Harmon, the actor who played Gibbs, hasn’t hinted at a return to NCIS, as he’s currently focused on other projects, like Origins.
I’m hoping we’ll see Gibbs and McGee together again before the show ends. Right now, McGee is doing well both at NCIS and at home with his family, and I’m sure Gibbs would be proud of the life he’s built.
