The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will begin on an emotional note.
The second season concluded with King Durin III (Peter Mullan) making the ultimate sacrifice to defeat the Balrog under Khazad-dûm. While he briefly broke free from the power of his Ring and made peace with his son, his death left the Dwarven kingdom leaderless. The third season will jump forward five years and show Owain Arthur returning as Durin, now unexpectedly king.
Arthur revealed in an interview with ScreenRant that his character, Durin, starts season three mourning his father and finding it difficult to adjust to his duties as king. He’s also secretly holding onto the seven rings crafted for the dwarves, a decision influenced by seeing how one of the rings previously corrupted his father. He’s keeping this hidden from everyone, including his wife, Disa (played by Sophia Nomvete).
Before all of this, something terrible happened in Khazad-dûm. A Balrog killed my father. Now I’m without a father, and without a king. I’ve unexpectedly become king and am responsible for protecting everyone in Khazad-dûm.
I also have seven rings, and I’ve realized they’re trouble. I’m keeping them secret from everyone, even Disa, because I don’t trust them – they changed my father and corrupted him, and I don’t want that to happen again.
Durin will have to contend with other Dwarf lords who are also seeking the Rings. At the same time, his brother Thráin (played by Eddie Marsan) returns to Khazad-dûm with Durin’s last living family member.
He’s in a really tough situation, truly stuck between a difficult choice and a worse one. To make matters worse, some dwarven lords are searching for the rings, and then my brother arrives at the mountain. He’s my only remaining family, my big brother, so that adds even more pressure.
Arthur praised the new actors joining the Khazad-dûm cast, specifically mentioning Owain Arthur and the performers portraying Durin and Disa’s children.
Okay, so Season 3 of Rings of Power really throws Durin into the deep end! Yes, he’s king now, but inheriting that title came with a huge price – his father is gone. Now he’s responsible for safeguarding Khazad-dûm, and it’s not just about protecting a city; he’s secretly hiding seven incredibly powerful items that every other dwarf lord desperately wants. What I found particularly interesting is how this secrecy impacts his personal life. He’s keeping these Rings hidden from Disa, and after they fought so hard together to reign in Durin III’s reckless actions, it feels like a massive betrayal waiting to happen. It sets up some really compelling drama, both for the kingdom and their marriage.
Thráin is his only living brother and last family member. Arthur also predicts this renewed interest in Durin’s family will bring plenty of conflict and excitement.
Durin’s story highlights how much things will change after the five-year time jump. He’ll be facing a lot more than just grief; now he must lead his family, manage his kingdom, and oversee the creation of the Seven Rings – a huge shift from where we last saw him mourning his father.
