HBO Max’s 10/10 Superhero Masterpiece Broke All The Rules Of The DC Universe

Live-action superhero shows have been consistently popular on TV, and one DC series truly stood out as exceptional. While Marvel has recently started to make a big impact with its TV shows after bringing its production back under its control, DC has been a pioneer in this genre for quite some time.

DC Comics has seen great success with TV shows, ranging from popular series like Smallville, which offered a fresh take on Superman’s origins, to the large-scale Arrowverse, and darker shows like Gotham and Titans. However, Superman & Lois, which premiered in 2021, stood out and ultimately created a unique identity within the DC television landscape.

Superman & Lois Broke The DC Template

Originally, Superman & Lois was planned as part of the “Arrowverse,” building on the storyline from the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event which revamped the shared TV universe. But early in the series, the creators shifted direction, choosing to tell a standalone story instead of continuing as just another show within the Arrowverse.

Instead of the large team focus seen in other Arrowverse shows, this series centered on the close-knit family life of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and their children. It also delved into the challenges and experiences of being Superman after decades of heroism.

Everything came together to make a superhero show that really stood out from the rest, and people loved it. This was probably because Superman hadn’t been the focus of a TV series in almost thirty years.

DC Struggled To Get Superman Stories Right

While Smallville was a great show, it didn’t fully explore the story of Superman. It spent more time showing Clark Kent’s life before he became a hero. And though Lois & Clark received some good reviews in the 1990s, it didn’t quite reach the same level of storytelling as the original Christopher Reeve Superman films.

The DC Extended Universe, despite initially positive reactions to Henry Cavill as Superman, ultimately failed to deliver a satisfying portrayal of the character. Cavill didn’t get many opportunities to play Superman, and even those appearances didn’t quite capture the essence of the hero for many fans.

Superman & Lois successfully captured the inspiring spirit, amazing abilities, and heartwarming qualities of Superman, all while exploring his life as a father and husband. It offered a fresh take on the classic story and was brilliantly done, making it one of the most compelling adaptations of Superman ever created.

The DCU Is Off To A Better Start

The new DC Universe is just getting started, but early signs suggest it will be a much better portrayal of Superman than we’ve seen before. David Corenswet’s version of the character seems genuinely kind and powerful, showing both his compassion and ability to face huge threats like giant monsters and fight against evil.

Superman is a cornerstone of the superhero genre, so it’s crucial that his story is told well. While we hope James Gunn will continue to honor the character as the DC Universe expands, Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman in Superman & Lois has already left a significant and memorable impact on the hero’s legacy.
