John Lithgow, a celebrated actor known for roles in shows like Dexter (as the Trinity Killer), 3rd Rock from the Sun, and Shrek, as well as the recent film Conclave, couldn’t pass up the chance to be part of HBO’s new Harry Potter series. He’ll be playing Professor Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts. However, the role came with some complications due to ongoing controversy surrounding the creator of the Harry Potter franchise, J.K. Rowling.
For seven years, author J.K. Rowling has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights, but her views have also led to accusations of being anti-transgender. This has sparked considerable public debate, with several actors from the Harry Potter films – including Miriam Margoyles, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson – publicly sharing their thoughts. However, not everyone has joined the criticism. Jim Broadbent previously expressed sadness about the situation, and now John Lithgow has told Variety that he resisted pressure to decline his role as Dumbledore because of Rowling’s views.
She’s built a really influential body of work, especially for young people, and it’s become widely known. At its heart, it explores the classic themes of good versus evil and kindness versus cruelty. I honestly find her perspectives strange and hard to understand. I’ve never personally met her, and she isn’t involved in this particular project. However, the people working on it are truly exceptional.
I was hurt by the backlash to my involvement, but looking at the Harry Potter books, there’s no indication of concern about transphobia. The author created a story about compassion and understanding, and Dumbledore is a wonderful character. It wasn’t an easy choice, and it bothered me that people wanted me to quit. Ultimately, I decided to stay.
Someone at the film festival immediately challenged his statements, saying comments like that weren’t constructive. The actor responded by saying he welcomed differing viewpoints and understood people would disagree.

If you’re still unsure about HBO’s planned series adapting the Harry Potter books – dedicating a full season to each one – the first images of John Lithgow as Dumbledore might change your mind. Photos from a beach scene reveal the classic long beard and glasses, but his Dumbledore also sports a notably dark, long coat, setting him apart from previous actors Richard Harris and Michael Gambon who played the role.

I’ve noticed a lot of fans are questioning the location in these new photos. It just doesn’t quite fit with the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – Harry never goes to sandy dunes in that story! It feels like a small part of the book is being really expanded on for the show. It seems like HBO is already making it clear they’re going to put their own spin on things.
