Harry Potter Director on Why Cursed Child Movie Is ‘Impossible’

Chris Columbus, known for directing the initial Harry Potter films starring Daniel Radcliffe, shared reasons behind abandoning his plans to create a movie version of the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” Throughout his career, Columbus has also directed popular films like Home Alone (1990), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), and Mrs. Doubtfire (1993).

Chris Columbus blames J.K. Rowling‘s ‘political stuff’ for no Harry Potter 9

In an interview with The Times, Chris Columbus expressed doubt that a reunion with the original Harry Potter cast for a Cursed Child adaptation would be possible due to some of them holding strong views on transgender rights that differ significantly from J.K. Rowling’s views on the topic.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’d have to admit that bringing this project to life has become quite a challenge. The intricate web of political issues has ensnared us, making it an arduous task for all involved. Each member of our talented cast holds unique viewpoints, and while we may share the same passion for cinema, our differing opinions on the current political climate have created a chasm that seems nearly impossible to bridge at this moment.

Columbus directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). In addition, he took on the role of producer for the third film in the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).

In 2001 and 2002, Columbus was the director for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets respectively. Furthermore, he acted as a producer for the third film in the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (released in 2004).

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play written by Jack Thorne, co-created with J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany. The story unfolds several years after Voldemort’s defeat, as detailed in the final book of Rowling’s series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In November 2021, it was expressed by Columbus that he intended to direct an adaptation of this play.

In the interview mentioned earlier, Columbus shared that it’s been quite some time since he last talked to J.K. Rowling, but he maintains regular contact with Daniel Radcliffe. He admitted, “I haven’t chatted with Miss Rowling for about ten years or so, so I’m not aware of her latest happenings. However, I recently spoke to Daniel just a few days ago, and I still have a strong bond with all the young actors from the cast.
