Guy Ritchie’s new TV series, a modern reimagining of the famous detective, has been a success and has been renewed for a second season by Prime Video. This is great news for fans, especially since there haven’t been many updates on another project connected to the series.
Everyone’s talking about the new Young Sherlock show, but it’s easy to forget about a third Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr.! It feels like that one is stuck in development forever, and honestly, I don’t think we’ll see it happen. I loved how Guy Ritchie brought a fresh, energetic style to the first two movies – he really breathed new life into the classic Sherlock Holmes stories.
Ritchie’s new Young Sherlock series on Prime Video isn’t a strict adaptation of the original Sherlock Holmes stories, but it feels like an origin story for his films with Robert Downey Jr. The show follows a young, impulsive Sherlock as he solves a murder mystery while still a student at Oxford. The first season concludes by hinting at an even more thrilling second season.
Honestly, I’m starting to lose hope about Sherlock Holmes 3. Warner Bros. had said it was happening, but with the Young Sherlock series looking like it’s going to keep going, it feels like Guy Ritchie doesn’t really need to revisit that world. And let’s face it, Robert Downey Jr. is busy with a ton of other exciting projects, so I’m not sure when – or if – we’ll ever see a third Sherlock Holmes movie with him.
Young Sherlock Season 2 Is Even More Exciting Than Sherlock Holmes 3
Production on season 2 of Young Sherlock is planned to start before the end of this year, with a release currently expected in 2027. This season will focus on the developing relationship between young Sherlock Holmes and his friend James Moriarty, who is secretly hiding the recipe for a dangerous poison.
As a fan, knowing that Moriarty is destined to become Sherlock’s greatest enemy really makes me excited for what’s coming next season. However, since Moriarty seemingly died at the end of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, I don’t expect to see him back in any future movies with Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock.
Many are even more eager for the second season of Young Sherlock than for Sherlock Holmes 3. The show is also expected to introduce new cast members on Prime Video, as Joseph Fiennes, Colin Firth, and Zine Tseng will not be returning.
If the new actors joining Young Sherlock are as talented as the ones we’ve already seen, the second season promises to be even better. The show hit its stride quickly, and there’s a good chance it will continue to improve.
Will Sherlock Holmes 3 Ever Happen?
The latest news about Sherlock Holmes 3 came from producer Susan Downey in an October 2025 interview with Collider. She said that everyone involved in the movies is interested in making a third one and they’ve been discussing ideas for a while. However, she didn’t share any specific details about when or how the movie might be made.
According to film industry source Daniel Richtman, plans for Sherlock Holmes 3 are still in the works as of March 2026, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed by anyone involved. However, even if the movie does get made, Guy Ritchie probably won’t be directing it.
Instead, Dexter Fletcher, who previously worked with Ritchie and directed Rocketman, is now set to direct the film. By the time we get updates on the script, who will star, and when filming will begin, Young Sherlock might already be airing its third season.
