Sherlock Holmes is a famously beloved fictional detective. Created by Arthur Conan Doyle in a series of novels and stories, he’s been portrayed in many films and television shows. Most recently, a new adaptation called Young Sherlock, developed by Guy Ritchie, debuted in 2026 and is quickly becoming popular on streaming services.
According to FlixPatrol, the TV series is currently the fourth most popular show on Prime Video globally. It’s been a Top 10 hit since it premiered on March 4, 2026. In the U.S., the show has been gaining traction, climbing to number 5 before settling back into the number 4 position.
The Young Sherlock series is based on books by Andrew Lane. These young adult novels reimagine Sherlock Holmes as a teenager in the 1860s and 70s, attending school and investigating mysteries – essentially, the early adventures that shaped him into the famous detective we know from the stories by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Young Sherlock Features a Talented Ensemble Cast
The TV series Young Sherlock was brought to life by Matthew Parkhill, with Peter Harness and Guy Ritchie further developing the show. Ritchie is well-known to Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts for his earlier work, including the 2009 film starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson.
The cast features Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the young Sherlock Holmes, alongside Dónal Finn as his rival James Moriarty. Zine Tseng plays Princess Gulun Shou’an, with Joseph Fiennes as Silas Holmes and Natascha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes. Max Irons portrays Mycroft Holmes, and the film also stars Colin Firth as Sir Bucephalus Hodge and Numan Acar as Esad Kasgarli.
The new TV series features Sherlock at Oxford University, but he’s a staff member, not a student. When a crucial document disappears and Sherlock becomes a suspect, things quickly escalate. The situation worsens when a murder occurs, and suspicion immediately falls on him again.
Ever since the first season launched, fans have been eager for news about a potential second season of Young Sherlock. While Amazon hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet, reports suggest Season 2 is happening, giving fans of the show and the famous detective reason to be optimistic.
Young Sherlock Was a Hit with Critics as Well
I was really excited about the new take on this classic detective, and it definitely delivered! From the start, both viewers and critics seemed to love it. Looking at Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 has an 84% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics, and audiences pretty much agree with an 83% score – it’s rare to see that kind of consensus, and it’s a great sign!
I just finished watching this new take on the Sherlock Holmes story, and honestly, I was really impressed. Peter Travers from The Travers Take put it perfectly – it’s a clever origin story. We see a young Holmes, played by the incredibly charming Hero Fiennes Tiffin, trying to grow up and leave his rebellious phase at Oxford behind. It’s fascinating to watch him evolve into the detective we all know. Beyond the story, the movie is just visually stunning, and the acting is top-notch. It definitely leaves you wanting more, and I’m really hoping they continue this series!
This show has a lot going for it, and could attract both longtime fans of Sherlock Holmes and viewers who are new to the stories. With its recent popularity on streaming, there’s hope it will be renewed for another season.
Young Sherlock is available to stream on Prime Video.
