Guy Ritchie’s latest adventure movie is continuing to perform well on streaming platforms, recently reaching a significant viewership milestone despite receiving unfavorable reviews.
This new adventure film, ideal for viewers who enjoy movies like National Treasure with Nicolas Cage and the Indiana Jones series starring Harrison Ford, launched on Apple TV on May 23, 2025. By May 7th, it had already become a Top 10 hit in the U.S. on the platform, proving popular even though reviews weren’t overwhelmingly positive.
It’s been 349 days since the movie Fountain of Youth was released on May 23rd. The fact that it stayed in the Top 10 for 300 of those days suggests it could have done well in theaters. Despite having a substantial $180 million budget – enough for a theatrical release – Apple released it directly to streaming. Currently, the adventure film is ranked eighth in the U.S. and seventh worldwide.
What Happens in Fountain of Youth?
As a movie buff, I’m really excited about this new treasure hunt flick! It’s a super fast-paced adventure about two siblings, Luke and Charlotte Purdue – played by John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, both fantastic actors you probably know from things like A Quiet Place and Thor. They haven’t been close for a while, but they team up to search for the legendary Fountain of Youth, inspired by their adventurous father. It sounds like a wild ride!
Luke stole a valuable painting from criminals in Thailand and now plans to rob a museum in Charlotte. He hopes this will give him information to help Owen Carver, a billionaire who is seriously ill and believes a legendary spring holds the key to his recovery. Throughout their journey, they are constantly pursued by dangerous enemies.
In addition to John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, Fountain of Youth features Eiza González, a frequent collaborator of the director, as well as Domhnall Gleeson from Harry Potter, Laz Alonso of The Boys, Arian Moayed who’s appeared in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and Stanley Tucci, known for The Devil Wears Prada.
Originally announced in March 2023, the film was first going to be directed by Dexter Fletcher (known for Rocketman) with a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (Scream). Later, Guy Ritchie took over as director. The production was quite extensive, filming in various locations globally, including the UK, Thailand, Austria, and Egypt.
Fountain of Youth Had a Disastrous Reception
I was really excited about ‘Fountain of Youth’ when it came out last year, but honestly, the critics weren’t too impressed. It seemed to have everything you’d want in a blockbuster – a great story, action, everything! – but it just didn’t quite click with audiences, which was a shame.
Critics weren’t impressed with Fountain of Youth, giving it a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 117 reviews. Audiences weren’t much more enthusiastic, with a 38% approval rating. Reviewers acknowledged the film’s exciting action, strong production values, and good locations, but found the story and dialogue lacking, and the acting from the famous cast to be flat.
