Warning: spoilers for Good Omens season 3.
After three seasons, the beloved fantasy series Good Omens has come to a close. The show delivered one last, feature-length episode, and fittingly revisited the first encounter between its main characters, Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and Crowley (David Tennant). Good Omens stands out as one of Prime Video’s strongest fantasy offerings, and is now considered by many to be among the best TV shows ever made. Prime Video offers a diverse range of fantasy programming, and this series is a highlight.
The last episode of Good Omens picks up a couple of years after the events of season two, and it’s so good to see Aziraphale and Crowley again! It turns out Crowley’s mostly retired and hanging out in an alley, while Aziraphale has taken a job in Heaven, trying to get the Second Coming going. And, like every season, they sprinkle in flashbacks – this time showing Aziraphale and Crowley’s adventures all the way back to the beginning of time. It really adds a lot to their story, seeing how long they’ve known each other!
The flashbacks in Good Omens are crucial for understanding the long and complex relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale, though the show does have some continuity issues. Season 3 introduces another ‘first meeting‘ between the angel and demon, but ultimately, only one of these initial encounters feels truly significant after the season’s events.
Good Omens Presented A Different Crowley & Aziraphale First Meeting In Every Season
Aziraphale and Crowley appear to be enemies – one an angel, the other a demon – but Good Omens shows their relationship is more complex. Crowley was once an angel who rebelled by challenging God, and Aziraphale consistently remained loyal to Heaven. This shared history gives their interactions depth, as Crowley has firsthand knowledge of both Heaven and Hell.
The first season of Good Omens begins with a flashback to the Garden of Eden, revealing that Crowley was the serpent who tempted Eve. It’s there he meets Aziraphale, and they seem to meet for the first time, with Crowley introducing himself. However, season 2 retcons this origin story, showing Aziraphale and Crowley actually meeting much earlier, when Crowley was still an angel and helping to create the universe.
The initial meeting between Aziraphale and Crowley now feels clearer, explaining their close relationship. However, season 3 of Good Omens revisits their history. The season begins with a flashback to the aftermath of the battle between Heaven and Hell, showing the archangels reflecting on what happened. At the Eternal Flame, after the other archangels leave, Crowley unexpectedly threatens Aziraphale and takes his sword.
Aziraphale attempts to greet Crowley, but Crowley responds that he recognizes him from the battle. This suggests it’s their initial encounter, but the scene’s true purpose – revealed after the events of the Good Omens finale – is simply to introduce the Eternal Flame. Ultimately, Aziraphale and Crowley’s final choice renders all previous meetings irrelevant, and the one that truly matters has an unexpected element.
Only 1 Of Crowley & Aziraphale’s First Meetings In Good Omens Truly Matters
When the universe ends – destroyed by the angel Michael erasing the Book of Life – Crowley and Aziraphale talk God into starting over. This new universe won’t have good or evil, angels or demons, and humans will be truly free. This also means Crowley and Aziraphale won’t exist anymore, and won’t be able to be together, but they accept this sacrifice, and the new universe is born.
Interestingly, the world also contains human counterparts of characters like Aziraphale, Crowley, the angels, the demons, Metatron, and even Jesus – people who live completely separate lives from their counterparts in the original universe. Therefore, season 3 of Good Omens features yet another first encounter between the two main characters, but this time it’s between astrophysicist Anthony Crowley and bookstore owner Asa Fell.
Crowley and Fell found each other, fell in love, and built a happy life together, confirming a sense of destiny. Ultimately, this one encounter was the most important, leading to the joyful future they both earned.
