Godzilla Minus Zero Lands Official Theatrical Release Date

The popular creature series is returning with a new movie that continues the story of one of its most successful installments. The eagerly awaited sequel now has a confirmed release date in theaters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Godzilla Minus One will be released in North American theaters on November 6th. Moviegoers in Japan will be able to see it a little sooner, with a premiere date of November 3rd.

Takashi Yamazaki, who wrote and directed last year’s Godzilla Minus One, is back with Godzilla Minus Zero. The new film picks up after the events of the first, where Godzilla was defeated but not destroyed, and began to recover while sinking into the ocean. Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, and Miou Tanaka will reprise their roles as Kōichi Shikishima, Noriko Ōishi, and Tatsuo Hotta, respectively.

While we know some of the actors who will be in the next Godzilla movie, Godzilla Minus Zero, the plot is still a secret. A short teaser trailer was released in November announcing the title, but it didn’t reveal much about what to expect from the film.

Ever since its release, people have been excited about a follow-up to Godzilla Minus One. The film is a gripping and intense historical drama, taking viewers back to 1940s Japan, where a battle against Godzilla unfolds amidst the political unrest following World War II.

quickly became a major success, earning over $116 million worldwide on a budget of just $15 million. Critics and audiences overwhelmingly praised the film. Currently, it boasts a 99% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 200 reviews from critics. Viewers also love it, giving it a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on more than 5,000 reviews. Notably, it’s the only film in the Godzilla series to win an Academy Award.

What Fans Can Expect from Godzilla Minus Zero According to Its Creator

In February 2025, director Yamazaki talked about the next film in the series, explaining that it will be larger in scope than the first one. He also assured fans that neither film used generative AI in its creation. Yamazaki believes AI is a helpful tool, but not yet capable of independently creating content at a human level.

We aren’t using AI in our projects right now, but it’s developing so quickly that it’s hard to predict how it will impact our work in the future. I personally still prefer shooting on film and using practical effects like miniatures. While I know we’ll eventually need to incorporate AI, I expect to be among the last to do so, as I enjoy working with traditional filmmaking methods.

The new Godzilla movie, Godzilla Minus Zero, will premiere in Japan on November 3, 2026, and will be released in the U.S. on November 6.
