The creator of ‘NCIS: Origins’ has explained the depth of Mark Harmon’s character, Gibbs, feelings for Diane, even as he develops a romance with Lala. After several successful spin-offs focusing on different NCIS offices, the franchise went back in time in 2024 with ‘NCIS: Origins,’ exploring Gibbs’ early days at the agency. While many aspects of the show were hinted at in the original ‘NCIS’ series, Gibbs’ relationship with Lala was never discussed during Mark Harmon’s run on the show.
I was so excited when NCIS: Origins was announced, because I thought it would all be about a young Gibbs! And it does feature some actors we already know and love from the original NCIS, alongside Austin Stowell as young Gibbs. But honestly, the show quickly became more about this new character, Lala. They’ve really established her as a huge part of how Gibbs became the agent he is, even though we never heard of her before. They’re still building her story, and sometimes it creates a few continuity issues with what we already know about Franks and his early days, but it’s still interesting to see how it all unfolds.
This involves the complex relationship between Diane, Gibbs, and Lala. As established in the original NCIS series, Diane was Gibbs’s second wife, which explains their connection in NCIS: Origins. However, this development seems to diminish the depth of Gibbs’s feelings for Lala. Executive producer Gina Lucita Monreal discussed this in an interview with TVInsider, clarifying how Gibbs views Diane versus Lala. Her full statement is included below.
It seems Diane is a really great support for him right now and he genuinely needs her in his life. She entered his life at exactly the right moment, and he has strong, real feelings for her. However, those feelings are different than what he feels for Lala, and he’s really struggling with that.

Fans of NCIS will remember that Gibbs and Diane eventually married and divorced—both events that will happen in the new series, NCIS: Origins. Diane later marries Tobias Fornell, but that marriage also ends. CBS needs to stick to this established timeline to avoid major inconsistencies. The prequel could also reveal the real reasons behind Gibbs and Diane’s divorce, especially considering the character of Lala.
According to a recent comment from Monreal, it seems Gibbs is only with Diane because he feels obligated, a point several characters in season 2 of NCIS: Origins have made to Lala, particularly after her car accident. While Gibbs has always had trouble with relationships, the show is complicating things by pushing the idea that he loves Diane, especially if the intention is to eventually focus on his relationship with Lala. The tragedy of Diane’s story is heightened if her belief that Gibbs was still hung up on Shannon turns out to be false.
NCIS: Origins faces a tricky task: making the romance between Gibbs and Lala believable without changing established NCIS history. Viewers are definitely open to a captivating will-they/won’t-they relationship, as CBS knows. The show just needs to pull it off without fundamentally altering what fans already know and love about the series.
