George R.R. Martin has addressed the recent discussion about the artwork in the 20th-anniversary edition of A Feast for Crows. The illustrated edition, released earlier this month, quickly faced criticism from fans who suspected some of the images were created using artificial intelligence. On Reddit, people pointed out strange details like weapons held incorrectly, oddly shaped hands and mouths, inconsistencies with the book’s story, and artwork that looked like it was taken from fan creations. Others suggested that even if it wasn’t AI-generated, the art didn’t meet the standard of professional illustration they anticipated.
Raya Golden, who collaborated with the artist on the project and oversees art and licensing at Fevre River, refuted claims that AI was used to generate the images in a statement posted on the artist’s blog on November 10th.
As a huge fan of this book series, I’ve been following the discussion about AI-generated art closely. I’m the one who approves all the artwork, and I want to assure everyone that the artist who created the pieces in question has explicitly told us he didn’t use any AI tools. He’s a digital artist, so he does use digital programs, but he’s been very clear that this work was created by him, and we completely trust his word. So, officially, we absolutely do not and will never intentionally use art created by AI. It’s just not something we’re interested in!
