Viewers were thrilled when Daenerys Targaryen emerged from the flames with three baby dragons. These dragons signaled the return of the magnificent creatures that once ruled Westeros alongside the Targaryen family long ago. While dragons had become almost legendary and their reputation faded, Daenerys’ enemies initially dismissed them. However, these dragons quickly grew to be much larger than the last ones seen during the height of Targaryen power – those had dwindled to the size of house cats.
As a huge fan of Westeros, I’ve always been fascinated by the dragons! It took a while for magic to really come back to the world, but when it did, it was all about dragonfire – that’s how Westerosi history was made. For over a hundred years, dragons shaped everything that happened. Sure, any dragon could turn the tide of a battle, but some were just unbelievably powerful, and House of the Dragon has really highlighted that throughout the series.
Tessarion Contributed To Victories At The Battle On The Honeywine And Tumbleton
Tessarion is a rather unique dragon, and not much is known about how powerful it truly is. It was still young when it fought in some key battles during the war in Westeros. Tessarion played a role in Green victories at the Battle of the Honeywine and the First Battle of Tumbleton, helping to turn the tide of the war in their favor.
Tessarion was a stunning dragon, famous for its brilliant blue scales and equally blue fire. It tragically died during the Second Battle of Tumbleton, falling in a fierce fight against Seasmoke and Vermithor. Tessarion was the last of the three to be defeated, succumbing to three arrows that struck its eye.
Silverwing Was Relatively Peaceful And Friendly
Silverwing was a silver dragon known for being unusually peaceful and friendly compared to other dragons of her time. She played a part in important historical events, most notably helping to burn the body of King Aenys I Targaryen alongside the dragons Vermithor and Quicksilver.
Following Queen Alysanne’s death, the dragon Silverwing wouldn’t let anyone ride her until Ulf the White, a soldier with dragonriding potential, successfully bonded with her. She fought in the Second Battle of Tumbleton, where she saw other dragons die, and was later left riderless when Ulf was poisoned. Silverwing eventually became mostly wild and lived for many years, becoming one of only three dragons to survive the Dance of the Dragons.
Vermax Fell In The Battle In The Gullet
The dragon didn’t survive much longer. During the Battle of the Gullet, Prince Aegon escaped on Stormcloud, and Jacaerys and Vermax seemed to be winning the fight against the Triarchy.
Vermax, likely already injured, flew too close to the fighting and crashed into a ship, probably killing him. Before the crash, Jacaerys was forced to jump from Vermax and was then killed by a crossbow bolt. The battle, the biggest naval conflict ever, ended in a stalemate, with both sides believing they had won. Despite the tie, Rhaenyra was deeply affected by the deaths of Jace and Vermax, and by the capture of Viserys.
Sheepstealer Got His Name From His Habit Of Butchering Livestock
During the Dance of the Dragons, three wild dragons stood out. One, called Sheepstealer because he killed animals on Dragonstone, was eventually befriended and ridden by a young girl named Nettles. She earned his trust with food, and while many others had tried and failed to ride him, it seemed Nettles and Sheepstealer shared a special connection.
Sheepstealer was born early in the reign of King Jaeherys I, making him a very old dragon – at least eighty years old, and larger than most dragons used in battle during the time of House of the Dragon. However, both Sheepstealer and his rider, Nettles, retreated to the Mountains of the Moon before they could prove their strength, so it’s impossible to know just how powerful the dragon truly was.
The Cannibal Was The Oldest And Largest Wild Dragon On Dragonstone
The Cannibal was the oldest and biggest wild dragon on Dragonstone, and it had a terrifying reputation for eating other dragons – especially young ones and their eggs. Even though dragons were incredibly important during the Dance of the Dragons, The Cannibal was too fierce and unpredictable for anyone to ride or control.
Cannibal was certainly intimidating, but it never had the chance to truly prove itself in battle against other dragons. This suggests it might not have been as powerful as it seemed. Fortunately for Cannibal, this lack of testing meant it was one of the few dragons to make it through the Dance of the Dragons. Its fate after the war remains a mystery, though.
Grey Ghost Preferred To Avoid Both Humans And Dragons
As a critic, I found Grey Ghost a particularly compelling figure in ‘Dance of the Dragons.’ He was truly a wild spirit, roaming Dragonstone completely untamed and without a rider. A naturally shy creature, he actively avoided both dragons and people. It’s fascinating to learn that despite his timid nature, several potential Dragonseeds actually sought him out, hoping to form a bond – but none could ever manage to find him. He remained elusive, a ghost among dragons, which really adds to his mystique.
Grey Ghost died in a fight with Sunfyre over Dragonmont. Despite spending its life avoiding conflict, Grey Ghost fought bravely when cornered. Sunfyre won the battle, but suffered serious injuries in the process.
Moondancer Mortally Wounded Sunfyre
During the Dance of the Dragons, Moondancer didn’t participate in many battles, but she achieved a significant victory: she fatally wounded King Aegon II’s dragon, Sunfyre. Baela Targaryen was riding Moondancer at the time. Initially, Baela had wanted to hunt the dragon that killed Quicksilver, which they thought was The Cannibal, but her request was denied.
After King Aegon II took Dragonstone, Baela and Moondancer fled. They then encountered the badly injured dragon, Sunfyre. Though Moondancer was small and fast, making her a nuisance to Sunfyre, he was much larger and more powerful. Sunfyre eventually killed Moondancer, but she seriously wounded him first.
Quicksilver Was Known For His Pale White Fiery Breath
Quicksilver was one of the earliest dragons hatched after Aegon and his sisters arrived. He was known for his silver scales and unusually pale, white fire. Originally ridden by Aenys, Quicksilver later became the mount of Aenys’ son, Aegon.
Aegon lost his throne to his uncle, Maegor, in a fierce battle fought over the ruins of Harrenhal. Aegon’s dragon, Quicksilver, was easily defeated by Maegor’s much larger dragon, Balerion the Black Dread. Balerion destroyed Quicksilver in mid-air, killing both the dragon and his rider.
Meleys, The Red Queen, Was Ridden By At Least Two Targaryen Generations
The central conflict of House of the Dragon, known as The Dance of the Dragons, resulted in more dragon deaths than any event since the Doom of Valyria. While not the first dragon to die, her death was significant because she was one of the oldest and most powerful dragons killed during the war. This event served as a major turning point, dramatically changing the course of the war and the history of the Targaryen family.
Thankfully, Rhaenys rode Meleys before she died. Meleys didn’t go down easily, though. During the Battle of Rook’s Rest, she seriously wounded Sunfyre, inflicting injuries that would eventually kill him. Although Meleys perished, she caused lasting and severe damage to both Aegon II and Sunfyre, impacting them for the remainder of their lives.
Sunfyre The Golden Was Considered The Most Beautiful Dragon In History
Sunfyre was King Aegon II Targaryen’s dragon during the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal war. He was famous for being the most beautiful dragon anyone had ever seen, but he was also a fierce and formidable fighter, proving to be a dangerous opponent in battle.
As a huge fan of dragon lore, the story of Sunfyre always gets to me. He was a total beast in the Dance of the Dragons, taking down more enemies – and other dragons! – than anyone else. But all that fighting really took a toll on him. He ended up severely wounded, and even though Aegon II wasn’t known for being a softie, the stories say he actually cried when Sunfyre finally succumbed to his injuries. It’s a really powerful moment, showing even the toughest characters can feel loss.
