Following the huge popularity of her novel The Housemaid, Freida McFadden is now working on adapting another one of her books for the screen.
Jennifer McFadden’s new novel, The Divorce, will be released on May 29th, and The Hollywood Reporter announced that Studiocanal and Working Title have already bought the rights to adapt it into a film.
Studiocanal’s Ron Halpern and Joe Naftalin are producing the film, though a director and actors haven’t been chosen yet. While details are scarce, the thriller will likely focus on themes of revenge and fighting to survive.
McFadden also shared a statement expressing her excitement about collaborating with Studiocanal and Working Title. She noted their immediate and enthusiastic support for the project, along with a clear plan for its development, and said she’s eager to see how it progresses.
I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Studiocanal and Working Title to adapt ‘The Divorce’ into a film. They’ve been incredibly enthusiastic and have a clear idea of how to make this project a success, and I’m excited to see it all come together!
Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh also praised McFadden, calling her novel The Divorce “brilliant, inspiring, and completely captivating.” She added that the book is “utterly gripping” from the very beginning.
The executive explained that the author has a unique talent for making readers feel strangely at ease, then unexpectedly disrupting that feeling with a twist.

Over the last thirteen years, author Jennifer McFadden has published several books, including The Devil Wears Scrubs, Dead Med, The Boyfriend, and her latest release, Dear Debbie, which came out in January. She’s already planning more, with The Witch scheduled for release in October 2026, following Dear Debbie and The Divorce. This will be her third novel published in 2026.
The author recently made news by revealing her real name: Sara Cohen. She writes under the pen name McFadden. By profession, Cohen is a doctor specializing in brain disorders, but she’s been focusing more on her writing lately due to its growing success, and has reduced her medical work as a result.
She became famous for writing the Housemaid book series. It started with The Housemaid in 2022, followed by The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid is Watching in 2023 and 2024.
Freida McFadden is a bestselling author, with millions of copies of her books sold. Her career reached a new high when her novel, The Housemaid, was adapted into a film in 2025, featuring Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins.
Even though it debuted in December against the popular film Avatar: Fire and Ash, Paul Feig’s The Housemaid became a major success, earning $400 million worldwide. It also received positive reviews, with a 73% rating from critics and a very high 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following the success of the first film, Lionsgate has approved a sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, scheduled for release in theaters on December 17, 2027. The original stars, including Sweeney, Morrone, and Feig, are anticipated to reprise their roles, and McFadden will be back as an executive producer.
Fans anticipating the movie sequel to The Housemaid, which is scheduled for 2027, can enjoy author Freida McFadden’s latest book, The Divorce, coming out this month.
