When The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuted on Amazon Prime in 2022, it faced enormous expectations. Many fans hoped for a TV series that would do justice to J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, matching the quality of Peter Jackson’s famous films. However, the show ultimately disappointed, failing to capture the enchantment and unity that viewers desired.
Instead of being the huge fantasy hit Amazon hoped for, The Rings of Power has faced a lot of criticism. While much of the debate centers on how the show adapted Tolkien’s original stories, many viewers have also found it simply isn’t a very compelling fantasy series. Despite spending a lot of money and aiming for a grand scale, many found the show visually stunning but lacking in emotional depth.
Good news for fantasy lovers who use Prime Video: there’s already a fantastic high-fantasy show available that truly delivers on what The Rings of Power missed. The Legend of Vox Machina is very different in style, but it offers the exciting fantasy stories that many viewers were hoping for from Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series.
The Legend Of Vox Machina Is A Fantasy Masterpiece
A Bold Animated Series That Delivers Everything Rings Of Power Promised
Amazon hoped The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power would become a major fantasy series, but the first two seasons suggest it hasn’t quite achieved that goal. While the show boasts impressive visuals and explores the rich backstory of Middle-earth, it hasn’t fully captured the enchanting feeling that has made Tolkien’s world so beloved for decades.
However, the first three seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina have consistently exceeded expectations. What started as a potentially overlooked fantasy series on Prime Video has become one of its biggest hits. Based on a Critical Role Dungeons & Dragons game, Vox Machina could have easily appealed only to existing fans, but it’s grown into a truly captivating high-fantasy show.
One of the main reasons Vox Machina has become so successful is its strong connection to its origins. The show captures the lively, unpredictable spirit of the original Critical Role campaign, but presents it with a more focused storyline. It doesn’t avoid the funny moments or important ideas that fans loved, and the characters still feel true to themselves, even when they’re being dramatic. The show maintains the same overall feel and adventurous spirit as the original campaign.
As a fantasy fan, one thing I really appreciate about The Legend of Vox Machina is how well it’s paced – something a lot of epic fantasy shows, like The Rings of Power, get wrong. It’s a tough line to walk, you know? These stories need room to breathe and develop, but they can easily become boring if they drag on too long. Vox Machina nails it, though. Every episode feels full of exciting stuff that keeps you hooked, while still letting the bigger story unfold naturally. It’s a really satisfying balance.
Amazon’s decision to build a whole series around the show demonstrates its quality. Vox Machina wasn’t a fluke, and the upcoming 2025 spinoff, The Mighty Nein, proves Amazon sees long-term potential in animated adaptations of Critical Role. Unlike The Rings of Power, which many see as a deliberate attempt to recreate the Lord of the Rings films, the success of The Legend of Vox Machina feels natural and genuine, and that’s what sets it apart.
The Success Of Vox Machina Makes The Rings Of Power’s Failures Sting
Vox Machina Highlights Everything Rings Of Power Gets Wrong
Although future seasons could improve things, initial reactions to The Rings of Power haven’t been great. Critics are split, but general audiences have been much more critical, giving it a disappointing 48% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Considering how much the show cost and how ambitious it was, that’s a significant problem. Both dedicated Tolkien fans and more casual viewers have expressed disappointment, with fans disliking the changes made to the source material and others finding the show unoriginal.
As a huge animation fan, I’ve been really impressed with The Legend of Vox Machina. What’s amazing is that it works whether you’re a longtime follower of Critical Role or completely new to the world – it’s just so easy to get into. That’s a big difference from Amazon’s The Rings of Power, which really struggled with that. Honestly, Vox Machina seems to nail what Rings of Power missed, and it really highlights why so many Lord of the Rings fans were so disappointed with Amazon’s take on Middle-earth.
A key difference between the two shows is the characters. The Rings of Power often presents characters who feel somewhat detached or lack depth, making it hard to truly connect with them. Vox Machina, however, boasts a cast of characters that are all distinct and genuinely lovable. Characters like Grog, the straightforward barbarian (played by Travis Willingham), and Scanlan, the charming halfling bard (played by Sam Riegel), could have easily been simple stereotypes, but they are surprisingly complex and fully realized.
One major difference lies in how each show treats its original source material. The Rings of Power has faced criticism for making big changes to the established history of Middle-earth, including shifting the timeline significantly – a change that particularly upset longtime fans, like moving Gandalf’s arrival forward by a thousand years. Vox Machina also adapts pre-existing stories, but its alterations feel more deliberate. It simplifies the original Critical Role campaign’s story while still staying true to the heart of what made it special.
Spectacle is crucial for any fantasy TV show, and while The Rings of Power has a large budget, its action scenes often lack impact. The visuals are good, but don’t feel very exciting. In contrast, Vox Machina consistently delivers incredible action. Its fight scenes are creative, fast-paced, and often stunning, comparable to the best action in anime or animated films.
As a huge fantasy fan, I think it’s generally easier to pull off those amazing, impossible moments in animation than in live-action. Both Vox Machina and The Rings of Power really tried to give us that sweeping, epic fantasy feel, but honestly, only Vox Machina consistently nailed it. That’s why watching Vox Machina succeed is so rewarding, and it makes the problems with The Rings of Power really stand out – and it’s tough to look past them.
