Be warned, this contains spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2! Director Emma Tammi suggests fans shouldn’t expect an announcement for Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 just yet, despite strong expectations. The Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, based on the popular horror video game series by Scott Cawthon, have been huge successes. The first film was Blumhouse’s biggest hit ever, and the 2025 sequel is already among the studio’s top ten highest-grossing films.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s films follow Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, a young man haunted by his brother’s childhood disappearance. He discovers that the animatronic characters at a local restaurant are possessed by the spirits of children who were murdered. Helping him face these terrifying creatures are his sister, Abby (played by Piper Rubio), and Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa, who is revealed to be the daughter of William Afton, the serial killer who created the pizzeria.
To celebrate the digital release of the movie, Ash Crossan from ScreenRant spoke with director Emma Tammi about Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. When asked about the film’s cliffhanger and the possibility of Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, Tammi explained that she and the team are still evaluating how the sequel was received, but confirmed they are continuing to discuss making a third film.
The second film is coming to home video soon, which is great news, particularly with the holidays approaching. We’re currently discussing future plans and expect to have more details early next year, but everything is still being discussed.
Before the 2025 sequel came out, many people expected a Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 because Matthew Lillard had a contract for three movies. Although Blumhouse usually waits before announcing new films – they didn’t even announce the 2023 movie until almost six months after it was made – they were always enthusiastic about expanding the Five Nights at Freddy’s series after the first film did so well.
Given this, it makes sense that Tammi is hesitant to share concrete details about the progress of Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. Blumhouse and Universal are figuring out the most profitable way to move forward with the third movie, especially since the 2025 sequel cost twice as much to make and, despite doing well, earned almost $80 million less at the box office than the original film.
The team behind the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, including creator Scott Cawthon (who wrote parts of both the original game and the new film), are probably also dealing with the negative reviews of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Despite this, the filmmakers have focused on giving fans what they want, and it’s paid off – both movies have been popular with audiences, earning scores in the mid-80s on Rotten Tomatoes and performing well at the box office.
Beyond how people generally reacted to the game, the ending of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 strongly hinted at many possible future stories. Most notably, Vanessa appears to be controlled by the spirit of The Marionette, and a message from Henry (played by Skeet Ulrich) suggests Mike may have also been affected. The message also revealed that Henry and Afton were partners who originally built the animatronics, which would eventually become the homes for the spirits of Afton’s victims.
Plus, the scene after the credits of the 2025 sequel confirmed that William Afton, in his Springtrap form, will be back in Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. Given the recent movie’s strong performance – it’s been a top 5 hit on many digital platforms since becoming available to rent – director Emma Tammi believes we’ll get official news about the next installment soon.
