Be warned, this contains spoilers for the 2025 film Five Nights at Freddy’s 2! Director Emma Tammi has revealed how the ending of the sequel, and what happens after the credits, hints at what will happen in the next movie. After the new, “Toy” animatronics are overcome by the original characters, the film ends with Mike asking Vanessa to leave him and Abby. This leaves Vanessa open to being possessed by Charlotte, also known as the Marionette.
After the main events, a short scene after the credits shows three people visiting the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. They’re looking for props to use in a haunted house and stumble upon the broken Springlock Bonnie suit – the one William Afton (played by Matthew Lillard) died in during the first movie – and decide to take it with them.
In a recent interview with Variety, director Tammi explained how William Afton reappears at the end of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. This sets up his role in the next movie, following a similar storyline to the events in the Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 video game.
The first movie concludes with William Afton being taken away, and we initially planned for him to reappear in the second movie, setting up a potential third film if it were to happen. This plan directly connects to the storylines of both the third movie and the third game. Throughout the film, we see brief appearances of Afton, but these are shown through Vanessa’s perspective, reflecting her memories and trauma related to him. Then, near the end, we get a look at what he’s become, even though the characters in the film believe he’s dead – it’s a clever way to bring the story back to Afton.
Tami also talked about the scene after the credits, which features an audio recording from Charlotte’s father, Henry Emily. In the recording, he reveals he used to be William’s business partner. She mentioned the idea for the tape came from similar recordings in the video games. She also thought Ulrich’s voice acting was perfect, especially considering he previously worked with Matthew Lillard on the movie Scream.
The film drew inspiration from audio recordings within the game. It combined elements of the Marionette’s ending with the connection between Henry and Mike. Primarily, the film serves as an introduction to Henry, though we don’t fully explore his past yet. That particular recording felt like a good way to hint that we’ll delve more into Henry’s story in a future installment.
As soon as Ulrich’s name came up, we all immediately knew it was the right choice and got really excited. Everyone on the team who heard about it felt the same way – they were incredibly enthusiastic. It was clear across the board that this was going to be something special and that the reunion would be a hit.
Michael’s change into a possessed Springlock Bonnie is based on events from the game Five Nights at Freddy’s 3. In that game, players try to survive at Fazbear’s Fright, a horror attraction themed after the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The only animatronic present is Springtrap, the villain who is trapped inside a springlock suit. If a third movie is made, it appears it will follow this storyline from the game.
The audio recording suggests Henry was killed by his daughter, Charlotte. She’s currently controlling Vanessa, and someone warned Mike about this before they died. This means Charlotte will likely be a danger in the next film, using the body of someone Michael harmed a long time ago.
With the characters from Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 now scattered, it’s a mystery how they’ll reunite in the next film. It’s likely Mike and Abby will hear about the haunted location and possibly learn about Michael’s reappearance. Since the children mentioned they could no longer hold him back, Mike and Abby will probably quickly understand what’s going on.
Charlotte’s frustration with parents in general might be directed at William, leading to a tense showdown between them as Vanessa is forced to confront the family’s difficult past. Because Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 revealed so much about the overall story, many long-running plotlines could reach a climax if a sequel is made.
