Finn Wolfhard may be involved in a future IT project. His brief appearance in the finale of IT: Welcome to Derry – where Pennywise showed a missing poster featuring him and revealing his mother, Marge – suggests a continuing connection to the series.
In an interview with Esquire, Finn Wolfhard shared that he’s signed on for another IT project after it was confirmed he’ll be in IT: Welcome to Derry. He said the creators, Barbara and Andy Muschietti, told him exactly what role he’d have. He also suggested that there’s more to come from the IT universe beyond that.
I actually learned about this a few years ago, back in 2021 when the show was first being planned. Barbara and Andy Muschietti let me know I would be part of it. Yes, I’m involved, and I think there’s another project down the line that fans will be really excited about.
The season one finale of IT: Welcome to Derry suggested that Pennywise’s evil influence isn’t finished. The episode revealed that this ancient being doesn’t experience time like we do, and was already aware of the events in IT: Chapter Two that would eventually lead to its defeat. It seems Pennywise’s awareness is somehow reaching back in time, as if trying to change the future and avoid being destroyed.
Pennywise attempted to eliminate the Losers’ Club members before they were even born by targeting their parents, hoping to stop them from ever uniting and defeating him. The prequel, It: Welcome to Derry, hasn’t confirmed whether Pennywise can actually alter the future, but it seems likely that something significant involving Finn Wolfhard’s portrayal of Richie will happen.
With Richie’s story seemingly concluded in the 2017 film, the purpose of a new project is uncertain. However, talk of an IT: Chapter 3 suggests it’s possible, perhaps involving Pennywise manipulating time to undo the Losers’ victory in the second movie. This could also explain why Finn Wolfhard might return for another installment.
Currently, the only project officially in the works is the TV series. However, a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry hasn’t been confirmed yet. Plans exist for two additional seasons, where Pennywise would travel further back in time – another 27 years each time – in an attempt to avoid his eventual defeat.
As a huge fan, I’m really hoping Finn Wolfhard comes back to the IT universe! I’m picturing something like Sophia Lillis’s cameo in the season one finale – a real, physical appearance. But honestly, nothing’s official yet, so we’ll probably be waiting a while to see it happen. It’s also interesting to think that maybe he’ll be involved in a different way, considering he’s been getting credits for work behind the camera now.
