A truly one-of-a-kind Spider-Man story finally arrives on May 25th. This new superhero series, exclusive to Prime Video, features Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly/Spider-Man – a darker, more mysterious take on the iconic character. It’s the first live-action Spider-Man show in many years, and it promises to be something special.
Spider-Noir won’t be alone – the new series features many familiar faces from Marvel Comics, including several of Spider-Man’s classic foes. Some of these villains are appearing live-action for the first time, while others are being reimagined for a fresh take that fans should enjoy.
Black Cat Will Appear in Spider-Noir (as a Civilian)
Li Jun Li will be a main character in Spider-Noir, playing Cat Hardy, a singer who also leads a double life as a criminal. Her character is based on the Black Cat from traditional Marvel comics. The Black Cat is known as a skilled thief who can sometimes bring bad luck to those around her. It’s currently unknown if Li Jun Li’s character will fully become the Black Cat, but she will be a key player in the first season of Spider-Noir.
As a longtime comic book fan, I’m really hoping we finally get a proper live-action Black Cat. Felicity Jones played Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but we never really saw her become Black Cat. I’m excited about the new take on Cat Hardy in Spider-Noir, and I’m really hoping the first season gives her a strong, developed storyline that continues beyond. The big question, of course, is whether she’ll end up as an ally to Nic Cage’s Spider-Man, or if she’ll be working against him. That’s what I’m really watching for!
Silvermane Makes His Live-Action Debut in Spider-Noir
Brendan Gleeson plays Silvio Manfredi, also known as Silvermane, the primary villain in Spider-Noir. While his name suggests Italian-American heritage – fitting with the comic books – in the series, Manfredi is an Irish mob boss. He becomes a powerful enemy of the Spider-Man of this world, presenting a formidable challenge and proving to be his most dangerous adversary so far.
In the comics, Silvio Manfredi gains increased power and a longer life by wearing a metal suit that also makes him much stronger. It’s unknown if we’ll see the full Silvermane suit in the realistic, 1920s world of Spider-Noir. Regardless, fans are excited to finally see the character brought to life on screen, as there have been previous hints of his appearance that never materialized.
Tombstone Appears in Two Spider-Man Projects This Year
This year, fans will finally see the Spider-Man villain Tombstone come to life on screen. The character, whose real name is Lonnie Lincoln, is a World War I veteran returning to New York City hoping for a fresh start. He eventually becomes a mob enforcer known as “Tombstone.” British actor Abraham Popoola will portray him in the new Prime Video superhero series.
Many movie fans might not know the character Tombstone well, but he’s about to become much more visible. He’ll appear in two live-action projects this year, starting with a cameo in Spider-Noir, followed by a major role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Marvin “Krondon” Jones III, who previously provided the voice for Tombstone in the Spider-Man video games, will now play the character on screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Molten Man Sets New York Ablaze in Spider-Noir
Initial trailers for the Spider-Noir series showed a character with the apparent ability to control fire. This original character, played by Jack Mikesell and named Jimmy Addison, doesn’t appear in Marvel comics, but seems to have a connection to the Spider-Man villain, Molten Man.
Molten Man, originally Mark Raxton in the comics and the step-brother of Liz Allen, possesses both fiery powers and a remarkably durable, metallic body that protects him from nearly all harm. However, throughout the series, Jimmy Addison might also become Molten Man.
Man-Spider Arrives 2 Months Before Spider-Man: Brand New Day
The trailers for Spider-Noir feature a disturbing creature that appears to be a spider-human hybrid. Though Amazon Prime Video hasn’t confirmed who this character is, many fans believe it’s Man-Spider, a character from the comic books. It’s currently unknown which actor is playing Man-Spider, or how important he will be to the story.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’m really excited about Spider-Noir! It looks like we’re going to see the Man-Spider introduced way before Peter Parker actually becomes the Man-Spider in the main timeline. There’s a lot of buzz that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might briefly transform, which would be amazing – and make this the second time we’ve seen this character in live-action, even if it’s a very different take each time.
Sandman Returns in Spider-Noir
A classic Spider-Man villain, Sandman, is coming back in Spider-Noir. Jack Huston plays Flint Marko, a bodyguard for Silvermane with the ability to turn into sand. This new version of the character will explore a darker, more tragic side of Flint Marko, as his powers are slowly killing him – a storyline often seen in the comic books. The Prime Video series appears to be focusing on this heartbreaking aspect of Sandman’s story.
Most Spider-Man fans know Sandman, particularly from his appearances in the movies Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s traditionally one of Spider-Man’s biggest foes in the comics, but he’s also been shown as a hero at times. It will be interesting to see whether the new Spider-Noir series portrays him as a villain or a hero.
Megawatt Bears a Striking Resemblance to Electro
The newest trailer for Spider-Noir features a character with electricity-based powers, leading many Spider-Man fans to believe it’s Max Dillon, the villain Electro. However, the creators of Spider-Noir have clarified that this character is actually Dirk Leydon, also known as Megawatt, and will be played by Andrew Lewis Caldwell. It’s a different, but similar, character to Electro.
I’m a big Marvel fan, and I recently discovered Megwatt – he’s a pretty obscure character! He only showed up once in the comics after his first appearance way back in the 90s. He’s similar to Electro in that he controls electricity, but not quite as strong. What’s really interesting is that he doesn’t make electricity; he stores it up inside himself and then blasts it out. I’m excited because his most significant appearance is actually in Spider-Noir, which means the showrunners have a lot of room to put their own spin on him when they bring him to life on screen.
The first season of Spider-Noir features a compelling cast of villains, including some well-known threats and others appearing in live-action for the very first time. Although Prime Video may have a few surprises still up its sleeve, the villains revealed so far are a great sign. Hopefully, each one will have a chance to truly stand out in this fresh and exciting superhero show.
Spider-Noir premieres on Prime Video on May 25.
