The latest episode is shaping up to be one of the longest finales in HBO history. While the network hasn’t officially said this is the last season, the episode’s length suggests it could be.
After a four-year break, the hit show Euphoria is back with Season 3, and it’s sparking a lot of debate. While some fans are calling it the best season so far, others disagree. Since premiering on April 12th, Season 3 has been incredibly popular, and it will conclude with a finale that’s the same length as those of HBO’s acclaimed series, The Wire.
HBO has announced that the final episode of the series, titled “In God We Trust,” will premiere on May 31st. The episode will be particularly long, clocking in at 93 minutes – that’s an hour and 33 minutes – making it one of the longest in HBO’s history.
Both the finale of The Wire in 2008 and the recent finale of Euphoria were unusually long, clocking in at 93 minutes. This makes them similar, especially considering 18 years passed between the two. HBO, known for not having commercials, has a history of letting its popular shows have episodes that don’t fit the typical runtime.
HBO has several extended episodes. The longest is the first episode of the series Vinyl, which runs 113 minutes and was directed by Martin Scorsese. Other lengthy finales include the 90-minute episodes that conclude seasons of Succession and the first two seasons of Westworld.
Both Game of Thrones and its prequel, House of the Dragon, are known for having episodes that run longer than usual. For example, the third episode of Game of Thrones‘s final season, “The Long Night,” lasted 82 minutes, and the series finale, “The Iron Throne,” was 80 minutes long.
The season three finale of Euphoria will be the longest episode of the series so far. While there’s been talk about a possible fourth season, HBO hasn’t officially confirmed whether the show will continue.
Okay, so as a huge fan of Euphoria, I was really worried about where things were going after Season 3. I saw an interview with Zendaya, who plays Rue, and she basically hinted that this season might be the end. When asked directly if the show would wrap up after this season, she said, “I think so, yeah.” She also added that we’re going to get some real closure with the final episodes, which is both exciting and a little sad! It sounds like things are coming to an end for Rue and everyone else, and I’m bracing myself for an emotional finale.
Euphoria releases new episodes on Sundays until its Season 3 finale on May 31.
