Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, is starring in a new horror film called When Darkness Loves Us. The movie is scheduled for release next year and will be Clarke’s first horror project in six years.
Bleecker Street has acquired the rights to release Clarke’s film, When Darkness Loves Us, in theaters around 2027, though a specific date hasn’t been announced. The movie, based on Elizabeth Engstrom’s novella of the same name, features Clarke as a woman who emerges after 15 years trapped in caves, determined to reunite with her family, even if it means facing terrible consequences.
When Darkness Loves Us Has Wrapped Filming
James Ashcroft, known for directing The Rule of Jenny Pen, recently finished directing When Darkness Loves Us in New Zealand. He collaborated on the screenplay with Hayley Sproull and Eli Kent. The film features a cast including Clarke, Marlon Williams (known for Sweet Tooth), Victoria Pedretti (from You), and Natascha McElhone.
Ashcroft shared in a statement how much they enjoyed bringing Elizabeth Engstrom’s story to life, calling it a true gift. They praised Engstrom’s book, When Darkness Loves Us, for showing how characters can be both deeply flawed and sympathetic, and for ultimately reminding us of their shared humanity – a quality that stays with you long after you finish reading, making you feel strangely connected to even the darkest parts of the story.
Bleecker Street CEO Kent Sanderson praised the film’s immersive world, saying, “While ‘world-building’ is often used too much, the incredible underground universe James and his team created is truly remarkable. This film is a real descent into darkness, both in its story and visually, and we’re excited to surprise audiences around the world with James’ unique take.”
Emilia Clarke Returns to the Horror Genre
I remember first noticing Emilia Clarke in a short film called Shackled. It was a really interesting piece, set in 1950s Louisiana, where she played a woman held captive by a circus. It actually ended up being part of Prime Video’s Murder Manual anthology series a few years ago. She also did a psychological horror film called Voice from the Stone back in 2017. And while Game of Thrones wasn’t strictly horror, let’s be real – her character definitely did some pretty terrifying things in the final season! It showed a different side to her, for sure.
I absolutely loved Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, but she’s shown incredible range beyond that! I remember being really impressed with her as Sarah Connor, and she was fantastic as Qi’ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Just when you think you’ve seen everything she can do, she voices a character in the new animated The Twits movie – so cool! And I’m really looking forward to seeing her in Drake Doremus’s upcoming romantic drama, Next Life.
When Darkness Loves Us will be released in movie theaters in 2027.
