Be warned, this contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 3 of Dutton Ranch, titled “Act of God Business.” Dutton Ranch shows a different side of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) than we’re used to seeing in Yellowstone. So far, she hasn’t displayed the intense, unpredictable behavior that defined her character in the original series. The show begins a year after the events of Yellowstone, with Beth and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) having moved to Rio Paloma, Texas, following a fire in Montana.
Over the five seasons of Yellowstone, Beth Dutton was known for being a troublemaker. She was often foul-mouthed, frequently drank vodka, and had little tolerance for anyone she considered foolish. This made her intimidating, especially towards her brother Jamie Dutton, whom she deeply disliked. While Rip Wheeler could usually calm her down, Beth also had a strong, though sometimes volatile, devotion to her father, John Dutton.
Beth Dutton’s character in Yellowstone relied on a couple of recurring jokes. She consistently enjoyed publicly embarrassing men who approached her in bars, and she always managed to cause a scene and leave the Dutton family dinners, much to her father John’s frustration.
Beth Didn’t Humiliate Joaquin At A Bar
The first three episodes of Dutton Ranch have surprisingly presented a more relaxed and kind Beth. In the third episode, Beth didn’t publicly embarrass Joaquin Reyes (Juan Pablo Raba) at a fancy bar in Dallas. After he identified himself as the person handling things for Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) and the 10-Petals Ranch, Beth treated him with respect and ended the conversation peacefully.
Joaquin didn’t make any romantic advances towards Beth, but if they were in a show like Yellowstone, Beth’s fierce personality would have immediately come out, and she would have sharply criticized him. However, Beth realized Joaquin held significant power in Rio Paloma and decided to be cautious around him.
Seeing Beth and Joaquin talking at the bar, anyone familiar with Yellowstone might have braced for Beth to lash out. Instead, she simply told Joaquin he reminded her of her father’s lawyer, which she didn’t see as a positive.
This comment was a jab at Jamie Dutton, who has seemingly vanished from public view. Only Beth and Rip are aware that he was actually killed and disposed of at the ‘Train Station’.
Beth Can Actually Sit Through A Dutton Family Dinner
In the second episode of Dutton Ranch, Beth returned home to a calm and pleasant dinner with Rip and Carter. Rip used the opportunity to share some advice about women with Carter – the same advice John Dutton had once given him. Beth happily joined them, and the three enjoyed a peaceful meal together.
In the show Yellowstone, Beth Dutton famously couldn’t tolerate eating meals in the dining room at the Dutton Lodge. Whether it was breakfast or dinner, and regardless of who she was with, Beth would typically insult Jamie or Summer Higgins and then leave, often with a bottle of vodka.
One of the most shocking moments for Beth was a fight with Summer during a family dinner in season 5 of Yellowstone. They physically fought, injuring each other, before surprisingly going back inside to rejoin the meal.
Beth deeply resented the Duttons’ dining room because it reminded her of the painful loss of her mother, Evelyn, who died in 1997. Seeing the empty chairs at the table was a constant, unbearable reminder of how fractured her family had been.
Beth has transformed on the Dutton Ranch, finding fulfillment in her marriage to Rip and their son, Carter. Now that she’s no longer focused on solely serving John Dutton and safeguarding the Yellowstone, her main goal is simply to find peace.
While ‘Crazy Beth’ might reappear on the Dutton Ranch at some point, the current version of Beth Dutton is much more enjoyable to watch.
