I’m really getting into Dutton Ranch, and the latest episode, “Act of God Business,” introduced a new character who caught my eye – Oreana Lynn, played by Natalie Alyn Lind. She’s Carter’s new love interest, and it’s interesting because she’s the granddaughter of Beulah Jackson, a powerful rancher. I was a little worried it might be similar to some storylines in Taylor Sheridan‘s other show, Landman, but thankfully, it feels different so far. It’s great to see a rebellious character like Oreana added to the mix!
The series Landman, which premiered in 2024, quickly gained notoriety online due to a character named Ainsley Norris (played by Michelle Randolph). A scene featuring Tommy Norris’ (Billy Bob Thornton) attractive teenage daughter discussing sex with her father, written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, went viral on platforms like Instagram, X, and TikTok, becoming the show’s first widely shared meme.
The second season of Landman continued to draw criticism around the character of Ainsley, particularly as she began college at Texas Christian University. Her somewhat careless and self-centered behavior frustrated the admissions officer, Greta Stidham (played by Miriam Silverman). The show also faced controversy regarding its portrayal of Ainsley’s non-binary roommate, Paigyn Meester (Bobbi Salvör Menuez).
Dutton Ranch’s Oreana Doesn’t Repeat Landman’s Ainsley Mistakes
Okay, so I’m totally hooked on this show! It’s fascinating how different Oreana and Ainsley are, even though they both grew up blonde and wealthy in Texas. The creators, Taylor Sheridan and Chad Feehan, really made Oreana a complex character. Ainsley, though? She genuinely seems like a sweet girl, and you can tell her parents, especially her mom Angela (Ali Larter), absolutely adore her. They’re sisters, but honestly, they couldn’t be more different!
As a big fan of Landman, I was really disappointed with Ainsley’s arc in season 2. It felt like they just turned her into a helper for her mom, and honestly, she seemed less bright than she was in the first season. Compare that to Oreana over on Dutton Ranch – she’s already so much sharper, more strategic, and frankly, a much more powerful character right from the start. It just made Ainsley’s regression feel even more noticeable.
On Dutton Ranch, Oreana is fiery and outspoken, a stark contrast to Ainsley, who is sheltered and focused on boys due to her privileged background. Unlike Ainsley, Oreana doesn’t have a stable family life; her father, Rob-Will, the foreman at 10-Petals Ranch (played by Jai Courtney), is troubled and ends up in rehab after committing a violent act against one of his workers.
Oreana and her grandmother, Beulah, don’t get along at all. Beulah is frustrated by Oreana’s rebellious behavior and strong language – something the character Ainsley avoids in her writing. Oreana, in turn, resists her grandmother’s expectations for her to be flawless and has no desire to take over the 10-Petals Ranch, fearing she’ll become just like Beulah.
Oreana and Ainsley haven’t shared any scenes together in Dutton Ranch yet, but Oreana clearly takes after her father. Unlike Ainsley, who receives constant encouragement from her mother, Angela, and unwavering support from Tommy, Oreana doesn’t have that same level of positive reinforcement. If they ever met, Ainsley wouldn’t be able to grasp why Oreana is so upset.
Before meeting Carter, Oreana consistently dated men who weren’t good to her. Her previous boyfriend, Hoyt (played by Kyle Dondlinger), was unfaithful and treated her badly. Interestingly, Oreana and Ainsley both share a willingness to explore their sexuality, even though their parents wouldn’t approve.
Oreana Is More Like Beth In Dutton Ranch Than Ainsley In Landman
In Landman, Angela is intentionally shaping Ainsley to be just like herself, while Oreana is deliberately portrayed as similar to Beth Dutton from Yellowstone. The show sets up a connection between Carter and Oreana, suggesting they have a relationship dynamic mirroring the early days of Beth and Rip Wheeler’s romance on the Dutton Ranch.
Carter isn’t like Rip was when he first came to the ranch. Rip and Carter had a difficult beginning after Beth took Carter in during season 4 of Yellowstone. Now 19, Carter and Rip get along much better, and Beth sees Carter as her son. Beth’s reaction to finding Oreana with Carter, as shown in episode 3 of Dutton Ranch, will reveal just how accepting she truly is as a mother.
Beth might find some common ground with the people of Oreana, especially a shared frustration with their circumstances and a dislike for Beulah Jackson. They also both seem to like Carter. It will be interesting to see if Beth feels like she fits in with Oreana, or if she thinks they’ll cause trouble for Carter.
Natalie Alyn Lind, at just 25, is already a seasoned TV and film actress joining the cast of Dutton Ranch. Coming from a family of performers, she has an extensive list of roles. This gives her a slight edge in experience over Michelle Randolph, who at 28, has really developed her acting skills while working on Taylor Sheridan’s shows 1923 and Landman.
Ainsley from Landman and Oreana from Dutton Ranch are both important characters in Taylor Sheridan’s world of TV shows on Paramount+, but they are very different people beneath the surface.
