Get ready for more Dragon Ball Super! A new anime, Galactic Patrol, is coming, and the manga is also making a comeback, as teased by creator Toyotarou. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the continuation of the manga for years, especially the Black Frieza Saga. However, even the most excited readers might not realize what the most exciting part of this new arc could be.
I’m so hyped for the Black Frieza Saga – it feels like it’s going to be huge! But honestly, I think what comes after could be even more amazing. They’re bringing in Broly, who’s become a really popular good guy, but let’s not forget how terrifying he used to be in the old movies. If things go a certain way during the fight with Frieza, I really think Dragon Ball could finally give us a villain we genuinely feel sorry for – a truly tragic character. It’s a really exciting possibility!
The Black Frieza Saga of Dragon Ball Super Has a Big Problem
Fans are really looking forward to the Black Frieza Saga because the Z Fighters are more evenly matched than ever before. Unlike previous arcs where a few characters clearly outshone the rest, Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and Broly all have powerful unique transformations that put them at roughly the same incredible level – making them the strongest mortals in the universe besides Frieza.
The core problem is simple: Black Frieza, even if he’s more powerful than all the Z-Warriors combined, is still just one fighter. It’s highly unlikely he could find new allies strong enough to challenge Goku and the others at this point – unless he somehow convinced Jiren and Top to join him. This makes it difficult for the artist, Toyotarou, to give each member of Frieza’s team a significant role in the story.
If the next Dragon Ball story doesn’t have a surprising turn of events, Goku risks overshadowing everyone else, again, and the exciting new storyline fans are looking forward to could fall flat. Luckily, the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly already hinted at a possible twist: the biggest danger to the Z Fighters might not be Frieza, but someone from within their own group.
Broly is the Protagonist That the Black Frieza Saga Needs
Dragon Ball Super: Broly is easily the best Dragon Ball installment in recent years. The animation and direction are the best the franchise has seen in over 40 years, and it truly feels like a well-made movie with a focused story and meaningful themes. Most impressively, it completely redeems Broly, a character previously known for flaws, turning him into someone genuinely lovable.
It was a shame to see Broly, Cheelai, and Lemo sidelined after their first movie. They missed out on the battles with Moro and Gas, and didn’t reappear until the very end of the Super Hero Saga. Although fans were disappointed, it might have been a good thing. Saving Broly for the upcoming Black Frieza Saga could lead to an even more impactful story.
Throughout recent storylines, the core four characters – Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo – have each had significant screen time and growth. Goku has completely mastered Ultra Instinct, while Vegeta has evolved with Ultra Ego and become more mature. Gohan has reached his maximum power with his Beast form, finally learning to control his anger. Similarly, Piccolo has achieved his strongest state as his Orange form, and taken on the role of a mentor to Pan.
These characters have reached their peak, both personally and as fighters. Without a major change to the established story, there’s nowhere left for them to go.
Broly would be an ideal main character for the next Frieza Saga for several reasons. He’s relatively new to the story, leaving plenty of opportunity for his development. Furthermore, he already has a strong connection to Frieza, who orchestrated the events of Broly’s movie, killed his father, and clearly intends to recruit Broly as an ally, having learned from Goku and Vegeta’s teamwork.
The most significant benefit of making Broly the central character is the dramatic potential it offers. Imagine the impact if Frieza managed to corrupt Broly – a character fans have grown to care for – and turn him against the Z Fighters. This would be a huge surprise and a real emotional blow for viewers. It would also balance the power dynamic, as Frieza currently faces the Z Fighters alone, and naturally lead into the next story arc.
The Dragon Ball Super Manga Can Take Broly Back to His Villainous Roots
Broly first appeared as a major villain in three of the Dragon Ball Z movies during the 1990s. Unlike the complex character we see now, this version of Broly was simply a wildly powerful and angry monster who enjoyed destroying everything in his way. Although he wasn’t a well-developed character, fans loved his impressive design and overwhelming power. That’s why, while turning this powerful Broly into a villain again would be a big change, it would likely make many fans happy.
Right now, Broly has no reason to work with Frieza. He’s found a peaceful life with friends on Beerus’ planet and is even training with Goku, Vegeta, and the others. But if Frieza were to kidnap Cheelai and Lemo and threaten their lives, Broly would likely be forced to help him. Despite his power, Broly is very trusting and would do anything to protect the people he cares about, especially after losing his father, Paragus. He wouldn’t think twice about betraying Goku and Vegeta to save his closest friends.
I’ve been thinking about the next big fight in Dragon Ball. It seems likely Goku and Vegeta will face off against Black Frieza again, but I wonder if Gohan and Piccolo could handle a rogue Broly. Considering how incredibly powerful Broly could become – potentially even stronger than anyone except Frieza – it’s entirely possible his anger could push him past even the combined strength of Gohan and Piccolo. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he ended up overpowering them.
The story could take a really interesting turn if, by the end of this storyline, Frieza is defeated but Cheelai and Lemo are caught in the battle and killed, Broly ends up killing Piccolo, and all the Dragon Balls are destroyed. This would make sense considering Frieza initially lost to the Z-Warriors because of the Dragon Balls, so he might try to destroy them. If all this happened, Broly would completely lose control and potentially become the main villain in a new story arc, much like his counterpart in the original Dragon Ball Z series.
A story arc focusing on Broly, titled “Broly’s Revenge Saga,” would be incredibly intense, both physically and emotionally. Broly’s immense and uncontrollable power—greater than anyone else in the multiverse—would threaten the very structure of reality. Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta would have to find a way to defeat him, grapple with the moral dilemma of potentially killing a former ally, and also figure out how to revive those who fell in the battles against Black Frieza and restore the Dragon Balls.
Dragon Ball has always avoided giving its villains tragic backstories, and now, with the future of the series uncertain after the Black Frieza saga – especially if it wants to stay true to the original ‘End of Z’ storyline – this could be the perfect solution. Introducing a villain with genuine emotional depth could lead to incredible character development and the most exciting battles between Saiyans we’ve ever seen, potentially making this the greatest story arc in Shonen history.
