Caution: spoilers ahead for One Piece season 2.
The second season of the live-action One Piece series welcomes several new characters. While Tony Tony Chopper is the most confirmed addition, the show also introduces Lera Abova as Nico Robin and Martial T. Batchamen as Brook, both of whom will become key members of Luffy’s crew. Charithra Chandran joins the cast as Princess Vivi, who travels with the Straw Hat Pirates for a time but isn’t a permanent member.
When the evil Baroque Works organization threatens Vivi’s kingdom, she bravely goes undercover to learn the identity of their leader. She then joins forces with the Straw Hat Pirates to reclaim Alabasta before the events of One Piece season 3. While working as a spy for Baroque Works, Vivi develops strong fighting skills, though the live-action One Piece adaptation doesn’t fully showcase her abilities.
Vivi’s Hypnotic Powers In One Piece Season 2 Explained
In season 2 of One Piece, Vivi frequently fights using a pair of blade-like weapons shaped like peacock feathers, which are connected to strings. These allow her to fight effectively both up close and from a distance, and when combined with her impressive agility, they make her a powerful opponent.
As a big fan of One Piece, I always found Vivi’s Peacock Slashers pretty cool, but something about how she puts Luffy to sleep in season 2, episode 3, really stuck with me. It’s this hypnotic dance she does, and honestly, after seeing all the other Devil Fruit powers in the live-action series, it makes me wonder if her ability comes from a similar, maybe even cursed, origin. It just feels like it could fit right in with the rest of them.
Despite appearances, Vivi doesn’t have the powers of a Devil Fruit in One Piece. Her ability to hypnotize people is a skill she learned, similar to how Usopp is a skilled sniper or Zoro is a master swordsman. She uses a combination of graceful movements, the swirling designs on her clothes, a strong perfume, and music from Igaram to lull enemies into a sleep. Importantly, this means she can still swim.
How Powerful Is Vivi Compared To The Other Straw Hats?
Vivi worked hard to join the Straw Hats, but she spent most of her life as a princess. Because of this, she isn’t as strong in battle as the others, even falling behind Usopp and Nami. Her ability to hypnotize people likely only works on those already easily distracted or prone to dozing off, meaning it wouldn’t be effective against tougher opponents like Crocodile or Nico Robin.
Each member of the Straw Hat crew offers valuable skills, even beyond fighting ability. Usopp is a skilled marksman, Nami excels at navigation, and Vivi is a talented diplomat. This diplomatic ability proves crucial when the crew tries to enter the Drum Kingdom. Vivi successfully negotiates their entry into the village, and without her skill, Nami wouldn’t have been able to get the medical attention she urgently needed.
As the story of One Piece progresses, the difference in strength between Vivi and the rest of the Straw Hat crew will likely become more noticeable. The Straw Hats will face increasingly powerful enemies, while Vivi returns to her duties as a princess. While Vivi is currently a capable member of the crew, she’ll likely fall behind in terms of combat power in future seasons. However, her talent for understanding situations and using diplomacy to avoid danger remains unmatched throughout the entire One Piece series.
