In 2024, Disney released Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the 2019 “live-action” remake of the 1994 animated film. The movie tells the story of Mufasa’s journey (voiced by Aaron Pierre) from a lost cub to a powerful leader. However, like the earlier remake directed by Jon Favreau, the film received mixed reviews, largely due to the realistic, sometimes unsettling, appearance of the talking animals. Fortunately, the story is now being revisited and expanded through a different format.
Dynamite Entertainment presents the first issue of a new comic book series based on The Lion King, the beloved film by Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers. This series doesn’t follow Simba as a king, but instead explores his childhood adventures as a cub. Before Scar challenged Mufasa for the throne, the comic shows the king teaching young Simba what it takes to be a leader and the importance of protecting the Pride Lands.
Edwin Galmon, the creator and artist behind this new story inspired by The Lion King (which was itself based on Hamlet), is well-known for his illustration work. He’s previously created art for DC Comics’ Mr. Terrific: Year One and Marvel’s Storm: Lifedream. He also worked with Dynamite Entertainment on a Terminator series and a recent adaptation of another popular Disney animated film that was made into a live-action movie in 2025.
Galmon created one of four alternate covers for the first issue of The Lion King comic. The other covers were done by Meghan Hetrick, known for her work on DC’s Bodies and Black Panther, Jacob Edgar, the artist behind Plastic Man, and Giulia Lomurno, who often reimagines classic superheroes with a Disney style.
The Lion King Has Previously Lived On In Comic Book Form
Dynamite’s new comic book offers a fresh look into the world of The Lion King, continuing the trend of prequels begun with Mufasa: The Lion King. This isn’t the first time the beloved Disney story has been extended through a comic book series, offering fans more to explore.
In 1994, Marvel published a graphic novel adaptation of the film, released as two issues. Then, over the next two years, they created a comic book series focusing on Simba’s friends, Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog. This series was based on the animated TV show featuring the pair, which premiered in 1995.
In 2019, Disney and Dark Horse Comics published a graphic novel called The Lion King: Wild Schemes and Catastrophes. This book featured stories about Simba’s childhood and the adventures of other characters, and it was released alongside the live-action Lion King movie. Then, in 2023, Dynamite Entertainment launched a comic book series that also served as a prequel, continuing to explore the story’s background.
The Lion King #1 hits the shelves on Nov. 19, 2025.
