Watch out! If you haven’t caught up on the August 20th episode of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” titled “The Golden Bachelor Live,” you can catch it with your active Hulu membership. Enjoy the show!
Following a season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” that honored shows like “Is It Cake?” and “The Rehearsal,” and included the memorable Janine curse in the crossover with “Abbott Elementary,” Season 17 concluded triumphantly with “The Golden Bachelor Live.” The finale, which was both tear-jerking and thrilling, offering a fantastic TV reunion, saw Frank participating on “The Golden Bachelor,” reminiscent of the real-life drama involving Mel Owens that the ABC dating show is currently experiencing. Did the gang foresee this? (paraphrased)
In simpler terms, the well-known former NFL player Mel Owens, who was the head of ‘Golden Bachelor’ Season 2, faced criticism this summer when he expressed a preference for dating women between the ages of 45 and 60 and stated his intention to eliminate any contestants over that age. As a fan of ‘Bachelor Nation’, I felt uncomfortable watching the finale of ‘Always Sunny’ when Frank, alongside Jesse Palmer near Bachelor Mansion, promptly dismissed the women in their 60s as they exited the limos, eventually exclaiming his disapproval with a strong statement.
No, no, no. Pass! Pass! Are all these whores gonna be this old?
My jaw dropped in astonishment, not so much due to my disbelief that Frank would make such a statement, as Danny DeVito’s character is known for testing boundaries. However, it was particularly striking because it resonated quite closely with the discussions revolving around the upcoming season of “The Golden Bachelor.
While Mel Owens’ comments aren’t as crass or over-the-top as Frank’s character on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” I found his dismissal of women solely based on their age to be surprisingly reminiscent of attitudes that I find unsettlingly familiar.
What the ex-NFL player said (in part) was:
The question posed to me was along the lines of “What are your preferences?” In response, I truthfully stated my preference for candidates aged between 45 and 60. The selection process followed, and I was chosen. Afterward, we had lunch with the executive producer. I made it clear that if the candidates were over 60, I would be making cuts. I emphasized the importance of physical fitness since I maintain my physique through regular exercise. Additionally, I requested them to steer clear of actors with artificial hips or wigs, explaining what I meant by such examples.
The cast for Season 2 of “The Golden Bachelor,” as of now, remains unconfirmed by ABC. However, there was only one female contestant who was under 60 years old among the potential candidates. Later, Mel Owens expressed that he apologized to the women on his season during the first night of filming.

Is this similar to “The Simpsons” foretelling future happenings? The filming for Season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” was completed in December 2024, long before Mel Owens made an appearance on the “In the Trenches” podcast in June 2025. Considering that “The Golden Bachelor Live” episode wasn’t slated to air until August 2025, it’s highly unlikely that either influenced the other.
It’s possible that Mel Owens has been secretly collaborating with Rob Mac and Charlie Day all along, and the truth of this elaborate prank will be unveiled during the premiere of The Golden Bachelor at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, September 24, on ABC. At this point, I’m almost convinced it’s true.
