James Gunn has shared some details about the upcoming Supergirl movie, explaining how it will connect to the comic books. He suggests the film won’t be a direct adaptation, but will instead take inspiration from the comics and put its own spin on the story.
James Gunn says Supergirl will not follow Woman of Tomorrow ‘religiously’
James Gunn has stated the new Supergirl movie won’t be a strict adaptation of the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In an interview with Variety, Gunn explained they’re using ideas and pieces from the comic—which he calls “great”—but aren’t telling the exact same story. While the comic did inspire the movie’s overall feel and how it’s put together, it won’t be a scene-for-scene retelling.
James Gunn has mentioned that Woman of Tomorrow and Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman were key influences on the new vision for DC Studios. However, he clarified that while they inspired the overall style, themes, and format, they won’t be directly adapted. He explained that they are using these works as a jumping-off point, not retelling the same story.
As a huge cinema fan, I was really interested to hear James Gunn talk about his vision for the new Superman movie, Superman and Man of Tomorrow. He explained that, for him, it’s all about focusing on genuine goodness. He wants to portray Superman as a truly kind and loving hero, not a flawless one. He actually took inspiration from the comics, wanting to capture that feeling of a big, genuinely good-hearted superhero – and that’s what he’s aiming for with this film.
According to Gunn, ‘Man of Tomorrow’ focuses on the dynamic between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, and he feels a connection to both characters – though he joked about not sharing their tendency towards murder. He also highlighted the consistent storytelling of the creative team and specifically praised the visual effects work on Krypto the Dog, done by Framestore and ILM, calling Framestore’s contributions ‘extraordinary’ and among the best he’s ever witnessed.
Working alongside Peter Safran as co-head of DC Studios has helped them combine the creative and production teams effectively. Gunn praised Safran, saying, ‘He excels at things I struggle with.’
