As a huge Marvel fan, watching the Daredevil: Born Again finale felt like the end of a chapter – especially for characters like Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock. But honestly, while this ‘saga’ feels finished, it might actually be a fresh start for the MCU. We’ve had cosmic battles and world-ending threats for years, and I’m kind of excited about the idea of the focus shifting to more grounded, street-level stories going forward.
I’m still excited for a full trailer, but it sounds like Avengers: Doomsday is going to be another huge, universe-level threat our heroes need to tackle. Honestly, when the whole multiverse is at risk, it’s hard to make things feel even more dangerous! What’s really interesting is that Daredevil: Born Again seems to be a different approach – focusing on smaller, street-level problems and making them feel just as impactful. And from what I’ve seen, it totally works!
Daredevil: Born Again’s Season 2 Finale Ended One Story and Began Another
Viewers who enjoyed the Marvel series featuring Daredevil were eager to see Jessica Jones return in Season 2 of Born Again. The season finale showed him working as a CIA agent, but he claims he’s left that life behind. Meanwhile, Mr. Daniels is spotted on a plane with Bullseye, who appears to be his new, enhanced operative. These final scenes seem less about wrapping up the stories of these characters from The Defenders and more about setting up future storylines.
On-set pictures confirm the return of familiar faces for Season 3, including Finn Jones as Danny Rand. The initial Marvel Studios series were made on a large, cinematic scale and dealt with huge, universe-level dangers. However, bringing back characters like Luke Cage and Iron Fist suggests future shows and movies will be more grounded and focus on smaller, more personal stories. Following Season 3 of Born Again, there’s a possibility that Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and new heroes such as Angela del Toro’s White Tiger could each get their own dedicated series.
The Punisher will continue to be portrayed as a gritty, down-to-earth hero focused on street-level conflicts. While he appeared in the first season of Born Again, he wasn’t involved in the second. One Last Kill will continue his story, likely setting up his future appearances in Marvel movies. This could indicate that Marvel is bringing the more personal, street-level storytelling style seen in their TV shows to the big screen as the MCU evolves.
The Street-Level MCU Ends Up Being More Relatable for Fans Than World-Ending Events
The upcoming Marvel movie will focus on characters operating at a street level and might include a clever callback to previous storylines. With ninjas from the Hand and a prison setting featured, Daredevil could join the Punisher in the film. The Disney+ series Born Again concluded with Matt Murdock (Daredevil) imprisoned, and following Charlie Cox’s cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, this new movie could finally show Daredevil and the Punisher fighting side-by-side in costume.
The trailer suggests Daredevil will be involved since he’s established as a close friend of Peter’s. Plus, Kingpin mentioned Spider-Man in Season 1, and with Daredevil still operating afterward, they probably met even though it wasn’t shown. At the very least, Peter would recognize Daredevil as his excellent lawyer and likely want to monitor his situation while he’s incarcerated.
As a longtime follower of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve noticed a clear trend: big, universe-threatening stakes aren’t always what fans connect with most. While stories like Loki and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine deliver those massive conflicts and generally resonate, it often feels like it’s the characters themselves – the ones we already love – that truly drive the excitement. Attempts to build momentum around newer faces, like those in Secret Invasion and Eternals, haven’t quite stuck the landing. Now, with Marvel gearing up to fully embrace the mutant world, I think they’re finally on the right track. Focusing on smaller, more personal, ‘street-level’ stories is exactly what the MCU needs right now.
A Street-Level Focus Is Perfect for the Upcoming ‘Mutant Saga’ In the MCU
Kamala Khan’s story beautifully grounded the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing on her personal journey and local heroism. While The Marvels was enjoyable, its larger, cosmic conflict didn’t resonate as strongly with audiences. As the MCU moves into its next phase focusing on mutants, returning to stories about everyday heroes is a smart move. The theme of being persecuted for who you are is unfortunately very relatable, and audiences connect with it easily. It’s easier for viewers to understand and care about threats that feel personal, like oppression, than to grasp dangers that affect entire cities, planets, or universes.
Shows like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist demonstrated how compelling stories can be built around everyday, local issues. Daredevil: Born Again took a city-threatening problem – though not everyone was affected – and made it feel as impactful as cosmic events or dimensional rifts. The fight scenes were surprisingly effective, even without relying heavily on visual effects. In fact, the lack of flashy CGI made the action feel more grounded and realistic.
Superheroes with unique abilities can capture audiences even when dealing with everyday dangers. The next Blade movie has been stalled for a long time, and the Moon Knight series left some plotlines unresolved. Combining these characters in a Midnight Sons project – either a TV series or film – could address both issues and allow the Marvel Cinematic Universe to introduce even more heroes, such as Ghost Rider.
Okay, so the Multiverse Saga really tried to go big with the MCU, but honestly, it didn’t quite land with audiences the way Marvel expected. I think a lot of us are craving those more grounded, street-level stories – the kind that feel a little more personal. While they might seem ‘smaller’ in scope, those are the kinds of films that really grabbed us after Avengers: Endgame, and I think that’s what Marvel’s been searching for ever since.
