Dallas Goldtooth, known for his work on Reservation Dogs and recent roles in shows like Fallout, Dexter, and Ghosts, hasn’t forgotten his early days as a background actor. Remembering what it was like to just try and catch a glimpse on screen, he recently found a special way to support Native American background actors while on the set of The Last Frontier.
I was so impressed with Goldtooth’s work on Last Frontier – he played Deputy US Marshal Hutch, and the show just wrapped up. He really went above and beyond to bring some much-needed representation to the screen. He spoke with the assistant director and asked if he could include Native actors as background cops during briefing scenes or investigations. Thankfully, they agreed! He was able to give some fantastic Native actors a chance to be seen, and he shared with me in a recent interview how important that was to him. It was a small thing that meant a lot.
It’s a small detail, but whenever I was filmed with police officers, I always requested that Native American actors be cast as those officers. I understand how important even a little bit of screen time can be for background actors, and I wanted to create a welcoming environment for Native actors in the industry. I would specifically ask for them to be included in scenes with me.
Goldtooth and I discussed how Native representation in media doesn’t always need to be overt. He pointed out that some of the best roles for Native actors are those where their heritage isn’t the focus of the character—roles that anyone could have played, but were brilliantly brought to life by a Native performer, like Graham Greene in the enjoyable film Die Hard With A Vengeance.
The first season of The Last Frontier just finished with its tenth episode, and all episodes are available to stream on Apple TV+. The show centers around a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness involving prisoners being transported by US Marshals. Jason Clarke leads the team tasked with finding the escaped prisoners, but the situation gets more complex when the CIA realizes one of their own agents was on board and may have been responsible for the crash.

Apple TV+ costs $12.99 per month and offers a 7-day free trial. You can watch popular shows like The Last Frontier, Severance, and Presumed Innocent, along with many other titles, on this streaming service.

The show gained a dedicated fanbase, but its average reviews leave its future uncertain. While Apple TV+ usually allows shows time to build an audience, it’s unclear if this one will get a second season given the lukewarm critical response.
If you enjoy fast-paced action or police shows that focus on tracking down criminals, you’ll probably like this one.
