The official nominations for the 2026 Oscars will be announced in under two weeks. Several films are expected to be frontrunners, potentially receiving many nominations, including One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, Frankenstein, and Ryan Coogler’s popular historical vampire film, Sinners.
Ever since its release, this film has been a frontrunner for major awards, and it’s still a strong contender as the Academy Awards approach. It’s almost certain to receive Oscar nominations, and people are now wondering if it could even break the record for the most nominations of any film.
14 Oscar Nominations Is The Most A Single Movie Has Ever Received
As a movie critic, I’ve seen a lot of films rack up Oscar nominations, but very few reach the absolute top. Only three movies have ever earned 14 nominations – a record first set way back in 1950 with All About Eve. It took over four decades for James Cameron’s Titanic to tie that record in 1997. And just recently, in 2016, La La Land joined them, solidifying its place among the most nominated films in Oscar history. It’s truly an exclusive club!
Although All About Eve received the most Oscar nominations ever, Titanic actually won the most Academy Awards, with a total of 11. Both All About Eve and La La Land each won six awards.
Even though it didn’t quite break the record, receiving 14 Oscar nominations is a significant achievement for Sinners. To tie the record, any film would need to reach that same number. While getting 15 nominations is a tough goal, Sinners‘ success with other awards makes it a possibility.
Sinners Breaking The Oscar Nomination Record Is Doable
Currently, “Sinners” is expected to receive a significant number of award nominations – likely more than ten. It’s a strong contender in major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, as well as in technical fields like sound, costume design, and film editing. The film is also predicted to be among the first nominated for the new Best Casting award, alongside potential nominations for original screenplay, score, song, cinematography, and makeup/hairstyling.
The film has already received 13 nominations, just one short of the record. Plus, Wunmi Mosaku’s performance is getting a lot of attention, which is improving its chances for a Best Supporting Actress nomination. If she’s nominated, that would bring the film’s total to 14 nominations.
Where will the film earn its record-breaking 15th nomination? Potential surprises could come from Miles Caton or Delroy Lindo in the Best Supporting Actor category. The film is also a contender for Best Visual Effects, and its impressive digital work – including Michael B. Jordan playing dual roles – could lead to a nomination there. Another possibility is receiving two nominations for Best Original Song.
With Mosaku added to the mix, Sinners has four potential chances to earn the extra nominations needed to break the Oscars record. While it’s not guaranteed to happen, and I wouldn’t predict it right now, the possibility itself shows just how strong a contender Sinners is for the 2026 Oscars.
