Conan O’Brien Criticizes Comedians Who Insult Donald Trump

Look, as someone who’s seen a lot of comedy, I have to say I was really struck by Conan O’Brien‘s recent comments. He basically called out other comedians for focusing so much of their material on attacking Donald Trump. It felt like a pointed observation, suggesting they might be better off exploring other topics with their energy.

During a discussion with the Oxford Union, O’Brien argued that comedians who constantly criticize Trump aren’t being effective. He explained that by focusing so much on attacking the president, they’re actually weakening their biggest strength: making people laugh.

According to O’Brien, some comedians are letting their anger get in the way of being funny, repeatedly making the same jokes about Trump instead of being original. He believes entertainers need to stay engaging, even when things are difficult. He feels that simply going on stage to insult Trump, or similar expressions, isn’t actually humorous and is exactly the reaction Trump is hoping for.

As a comedy fan, I found O’Brien’s take really interesting. He basically said that comedy feels a little directionless right now, and that makes it tough to come up with genuinely new stuff. He thinks a lot of comedians have fallen into the trap of just constantly bashing Trump, which he gets – people are frustrated! – but it’s just not that funny or original. For him, the heart of comedy is about being surprising, making you think, and actually being entertaining, and that’s getting lost when it’s all just based on anger.

Some comedians have adopted a strategy of constantly criticizing Trump, and I believe that approach is actually working against them. It’s become predictable, and their anger is overshadowing their humor. They’ve essentially traded wit for outrage, and in doing so, they’ve lost their most effective tool – the ability to make people laugh.

Some people think that when times are tough, there’s no place for humor. But I believe comedians always need to be funny – they just have to find a way to express it. Turning anger into something creative is powerful, because art is a great way to challenge authority. Simply being angry, though, isn’t as effective; you lose the ability to really make a difference.

Conan O’Brien, a late-night host for almost thirty years, generally steers clear of political commentary – more so than many of his peers. He’s known for his self-deprecating humor and a generally lighthearted approach. He’s even stated on his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, that he doesn’t consider himself a political comedian.
