In mid-April, Peacock cancelled Law & Order: Organized Crime after ten months without a new season. Ever since, fans have been eagerly hoping for news about whether Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler will team up again on the show.
The duo were a part of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and their chemistry was undeniable, although nothing romantic has happened yet. Meloni left SVU after 12 seasons, and then he came back with his own spinoff, which aired for five seasons. In a new interview with People, Law & Order: SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas gave a positive update on a potential Benson and Stabler reunion.
Stabler & Benson Could Finally Happen
Rumors started circulating that Christopher Meloni might rejoin the popular NBC show. But those plans hit a snag when he announced a new project. Shortly after the show ended, Hulu revealed a new drama called The Land, set in the NFL, with Meloni playing a coach.
The reunion isn’t impossible, though. Fazekas acknowledged that fans are hoping for his return, and thankfully, there’s still a lot of interest.
People are constantly asking about Elliot Stabler, and I’m a big fan of Christopher Meloni. I’d work with him whenever he’s available – I really tried to make it happen!
While his return isn’t official yet, he’s expected to appear, possibly just for a short scene. The decision now rests with Meloni.
In a social media post, Meloni expressed gratitude to fans for their support of his character, Elliot Stabler. He thanked them for helping the character thrive for so many years and for welcoming him back. He reflected on his time playing Stabler as a wonderful experience, adding that the role gave him a career beyond his expectations – almost 17 years long.
While that might’ve sounded like an exit from the franchise, the showrunner’s recent update teases that there might be an open door for his return.
Law & Order: SVU Has Been Renewed
Following the cancellation of Organized Crime, NBC announced the renewal of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for another season. SVU is the longest-running show in the Law & Order franchise, and the franchise itself has been renewed for Season 26.
Law & Order: SVU, which first aired in 1999 with Mariska Hargitay as Detective Olivia Benson, has been renewed for two more seasons, making it the longest-running drama series on TV.
Law & Order: SVU will return this fall on NBC.
